Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Shared Meal

(Old Testament)

Leviticus 23

The Day of Atonement

26 The Lord said to Moses, 27 “The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves,[d] and present a food offering to the Lord. 28 Do not do any work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God. 29 Those who do not deny themselves on that day must be cut off from their people. 30 I will destroy from among their people anyone who does any work on that day. 31 You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. 32 It is a day of sabbath rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”

(End of Scripture Passage)

Yom Kippur is a day of rest, fasting and sacrifices of atonement for priests and people and atonement for the tabernacle and altar, cleansing people and priests and king from their sins and purifying the Holy Place in the Temple.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The following is a totally apocryphal story, told to me by my Mother, with no documentation...only her memory, but here goes:

Mom was born in 1926 and grew up in Dorchester, which was actually part of the City of Boston. It had some lovely Victorian Homes (which now sell for a lot of money), an actual Ocean Beach (named after an obscure island in the South Pacific which would be relatively unknown till WW2), and a main boulevard that went all the way from Downtown Boston to the small range of rolling hills just outside the City in Milton (Blue Hill Avenue). In spite of these incredible "perks", most of Dorchester during the Great Depression was populated by the poor, who lived in iconic "Three-Deckers" which could house several families on one small lot of land. Dorchester back then could almost be equally divided between two ethnic groups, The Irish and European Jews. It was not unusual to see an Irish Pub abutting a Kosher Meat Market, or a massive Granite Synagogue across the street from a massive Granite Romanesque or Gothic-Style Catholic Church. When asked where one lived in Dorchester, the prevailing question was "What Parrish?"

People got along pretty well, and patronized each others' business. The G & G Deli (Jewish), for example was a favorite hangout for James Michael Curley (Irish Politician) and was a political arena at times. Years later, a mural of the G & G Deli was painted on the inside walls of a large Jewish Nursing Care facility in Boston, and I got permission from the artist to picture it on the album cover of my first CD, "BLUE HILL AVENUE". Anyway, enough of the set-up. Here's the story as my Mom presented it to me.

Because of the nearly equal proportions of Jewish and Irish Catholic students in the Dorchester Schools, the School Committee invited leaders from both religions to come to a meeting to discuss one extra day off from school for their most sacred holiday. Passover was a whole week long, and the High Holy Days included the Ten Days of Awe and a Week of Sukkot. Meanwhile, Christmas Vacation and Spring Break took care of most of the Christian Holidays. There was some contention back and forth, but it was finally decided that Good Friday would be a day off, and Yom Kippur would be the analogous Jewish Holiday. Because of this compromise, Jewish shops on Blue Hill Avenue often would close down of Good Friday between noon and 3:00PM. In return the Irish pubs closed on Yom Kippur for most of the day.

This kind of cooperation and respect is SO UNUSUAL in our current society, that it almost seems like a fabrication. Mom is no longer with us, so who knows? But it's a lovely story, anyway, and shows the REAL spirit of the Melting Pot that once was America. It is not "Diversity" that is our strength, but Unity and Respect.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Christ Is Risen. He is Risen Indeed.

God Bless America!

Amen to your words. Yes, civility and respect are lacking today. Will we ever get them back?

My prayers always. God bless.

Wow! What's the word for a pithy sentence that encapsulates very great wisdom? Maybe the Word A Day wordsmiths can capture that concept in one word. Never mind, I'll go ask them later instead of hijacking your prayer thread.

Amen.

Numbers 6:23 Say to Aaron and his sons, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them, The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you; The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you; The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually). And they shall put My name upon the Israelites, and I will bless them.

And this we do, proclaim and agree in Jesus name. Amen.
