French Doctors Condemn a Patient to Death Against Parents’ Wishes

The decision comes as France is considering legalizing euthanasia

REIMS, France (ChurchMilitant.com) - French Doctors are removing nourishment and hydration for an unconscious man with paralysis despite the fact other hospitals are willing to care for him.

Vincent Lambert, who was injured in a 2008 car crash which left him severely brain damaged in a coma as a quadriplegic, is receiving basic hydration and nutrition at the Sebastopol Hospital in Reims, France. His doctors and specialists have shown that he is breathing on his own, responding to stimuli and his condition is stable.

But Lambert's physician, Dr. Vincent Sanchez, ruled Monday after a collegiate procedure lasting five months that continually feeding and hydrating the patient was considered "unreasonable obstinacy." He instructed the hospital to stop treating Lambert and to euthanize him within 10 days unless there is another appeal to administrative justice.

"We dispute the fact that Vincent is in a situation of 'unreasonable obstinacy.' We are faced with a decision of euthanasia, of life arrest and the patient's mother, father, brother and sister received this decision as a punch in the stomach. They witnessed a death sentence today," said Jean Paillot, one of Lambert's parents' lawyers.

So to have the Brits. Just shows that they never really had freedom over there. However, we are in real danger of losing ours here as well, the way the Constitution keeps getting trampled on.

To play devils advocate here. He has been in a coma for 10 years and is brain damaged? They have been keeping him alive as a veggie so they could experiment on him. Now that is over so they are going to let him die. He cannot be helped back to a real life so let the poor man go.

Are we being cruel to keep these poor people alive like this? Who know what is going on in his mind? I was in a coma for 11 days and it was Hell. I don’t remember specifics but remember enough to know it was not a fun time.

I feel the same about people praying for a transplant heart, liver or ? for their child. They are actually praying some other child dies in a way their organs can be used.

I’m glad to hear of your recovery. What do you remember of being in a coma for 11 days, which allowed healing to take place?

Something to consider:

Coma is a period of prolonged unconsciousness, a coma can be caused by injury or physical illness — and in rare cases induced by doctors as a treatment option. Recovery is unpredictable and sometimes inexplicable. Seven years after a horrific car accident, South African Ayanda Nqinana finally awoke in early September, 2012. Ironically, the "miracle cure" for Nqinana was a sleeping pill similar to Ambien. Nqinana's story is proof that sometimes hope and patience prevail, as miraculous awakenings have been reported for patients in comas as long as 19 years.
