Hawaii Legalizes Assisted Suicide

HONOLULU, April 6, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – On Thursday, the governor of Hawaii signed legislation making it the sixth state to allow doctor-assisted suicide.

To the delight of assisted suicide activists, Democratic Gov. David Ige signed HB 2739 into law, saying it’s “time for terminally ill, mentally competent Hawaii residents who are suffering to make their own end-of-life choices with dignity, grace and peace.”

Effective January 1, 2019, Hawaii will be the sixth state to fully allow the practice. California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, Washington state, and the District of Columbia legalized assisted suicide legislatively or via voter initiatives. In Montana, the state Supreme Court ruled that state law did not expressly prohibit it.

Ige claimed that the legislation was crafted to ensure patients could not kill themselves without thinking it through, and to prevent physicians from forcing the decision on a patient.

The Hawaii law requires two separate healthcare providers to confirm the patient’s voluntary request for death, diagnosis, prognosis, and medical competence. It also requires the patient to make two oral requests separated by a 20-day waiting period. Finally, the patient must sign a written request before two witnesses, one of whom must be a non-relative. Coercing an assisted suicide request is a felony under the new law.

Pro-life advocates say such measures do not do enough to protect vulnerable patients.

State Sen. Mike Gabbard, a Democrat who voted against the bill, called attention to the fact that it requires death certificates to list patients’ cause of death as their underlying terminal illness rather than the life-ending drugs they took.

That's going to raise some issues with the insurance companies. Falsification of records to camouflage a controversial policy choice is bad stuff.

Most people move to Hawaii for the beauty and the water.

Now they will move there to die.

I don’t get that either———how on earth can it be legal?

Unbelievable,

It's legal in closer states, and HI is an expensive place to go for that. There may be varying conditions and tests, but physician-assisted suicide is legal in CA, OR, WA, CO, VT, DC, also MT (by court decision).

Other states have considered it, many no legislation this year.

Not advocating it, just tried to find the most up-to-date information.

How soon before they force uncooperative physicians to assist? If the left can oppress Christian bakers for not cranking out a gay celebration cake, surely they can force doctors to violate their Hippocratic oath. Or has this already occurred?

Paging Dr. Kevorkian ...

I never understood how so called small government conservatives would have a problem with terminally ill people ending their life on their own terms with the help of their Dr.

So Grandmas statewide had better be on their guard...particularly if they have any kind of net worth.

That is right up there with the Rs that are anti birth control and/or welfare and anti abortion.

While the LIBs have no problem killing unborns and letting mass murderers walk (unless the MM is attacking a lib group or institution)

I am not expressing an 'opinion', merely pointing out the hypocrisy of BOTH sides.

I really think you have hit on the key issue here.

People will do it for alterior motive, pressure oldies into dying and succeed where they wouldn’t if this legislation hadn’t passed

I agree. I’m not seeing why the idea of a dying person gaining some small element of control of the terms of their impending death is so abhorrent to so many people.

Well then this ought to be good news to the families of murder victims that the drugs so wonderful for assisted suicide can also be used to execute convicted murderers, right?
