Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Story of The Exodus

(Old Testament)

Exodus 2

The Birth of Moses

2 Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, 2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket[a] for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. 4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

8 “Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses,[b] saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

Moses Flees to Midian

11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?”

14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

15 When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well. 16 Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock.

18 When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”

19 They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”

20 “And where is he?” Reuel asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.”

21 Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. 22 Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom,[c] saying, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”

23 During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. 24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

Footnotes:

1. Exodus 2:3 The Hebrew can also mean ark, as in Gen. 6:14.
2. Exodus 2:10 Moses sounds like the Hebrew for draw out.
3. Exodus 2:22 Gershom sounds like the Hebrew for a foreigner there.

(End of Scripture Passage)

Today we read of the rescue of Moses. Moses is a descendant of Levi, of the family who would eventually be chosen as the Priests of God, however, at this point in time he is just another male baby designated for death. His mother and big sister Miriam can't stand the thought of him being killed, and they place the three-month-old in a basket and send him down the River Nile. Miriam runs along the shore to keep watch, and is there at the right time when Pharaoh's Daughter plucks Moses out of the River.

What on earth was Jochabed thinking when she put her child out onto the River?

What gave Pharaoh's Daughter the Compassion and Tenderness to rescue this Child?

What gave Miriam the cleverness to hire Moses' own Mother as a Nurse, or the courage to even suggest such a thing to the Royal House?

The plan and providence of God, Who sees the end from the beginning and the beginning from the end, is truly a marvelous thing!

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

My childhood knowledge of the Old Testament was mostly gleaned from Hollywood, so I grew up with a lot of misconceptions. When I finally did start reading the Scriptures, I found out that Ruth was NOT a priestess of Chemosh in Moab, Samson did NOT look like Victor Mature, and Moses did NOT have a love affair with Nefertiri, Pharaoh's Daughter. However, "The Ten Commandments" is still one of my favorite movies of all time, and I love the "lore" that goes with the making of that great movie. And so, I will share with you one of my own (true) stories that relates to this movie.

Through a friend of a friend, I became acquainted with a person who assisted Charlton Heston in his waning years of struggle with the horrible disease of Alzheimers. I was also teaching piano at that time to a very young Jewish boy who was starting his Bar Mitzvah Lessons and had become very interested in his religion. He also loved Movies. He asked me if I knew of any movies he could rent (VHS in those days) that would tell him more about his religion and help with his studies. Naturally, I told him to ask his Dad to rent "The Ten Commandments".

A week went by, and at the next lesson, I asked him if he saw the movie.

"I LOVED it! he said. "I sat still for the the whole thing and didn't even leave to go to the bathroom!"

I smiled. "yeah...it's one of my favorite movies!"

"But" he mused..."I have a question."

(Oh no...I thought, maybe he should ask the Theological questions from his Rabbi...WHAT'S he going to ask me?)

"What's that" I asked.

With a very serious look, he asked:

"What was MOSES doing on the Planet of the Apes?" (Another Heston movie!)

Well, I laughed so hard I almost fell off the piano bench. I shared the story with my friend, and HE shared the story with Charlton Heston, who even in his state of illness, got the joke and laughed that wonderful hearty laugh of his.

Many years have passed and I am probably the only one left who remembers this story, but now you know it too.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

May the strength of God pilot us, may the wisdom of God instruct us, may the hand of God protect us, may the word of God direct us. Be always ours this day and for evermore.
(St. Patrick)

You’re right! Similar themes...deliverance from slavery, a hero demanding “Let My People Go” (translated as “Get you hands off me you dam dirty ape!”), destruction brought down upon a sinful civilization, etc. LOL.

And of course, Charlton as the hero.

I saw “Plant Of The Apes” in the same ratty theater as “The Ten Commandments”, the now-defunct RIATO in Roslindale Squayahh.

Aaron was probably born before the evil edict, as he was older than Moses. Anyway...that’s just my theory, because the Bible is silent about that.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem.

I think I told you this story before, so bear with me.

I met Charlton Heston at an NRA convention in Reno in 2002. He was the president of the NRA back then.

At his book signing, he kissed my hand. My husband was there and he didn’t mind. Mr. Heston kissed all the ladies’ hands.

He was infirmed at the time and reserved his strength. But came on stage. Held up a rifle from the American Revolution and roared - From my cold, dead hands!

I always loved these movies too. My dad, who was an alcoholic used to watch them with me and my sisters when we were kids. I saw in him a reverence for God and had always hoped that would remain with him, regardless of his progression in drinking. The Lord knew my heart, 2 days before he died from sclerosis of the liver, he prayer to Jesus with me for forgiveness. To God be the Glory forever and ever. Amen.
