The die was cast on this a LOOOOOONG time ago.
-Civil law no longer supports Church teaching on marriage. One spouse can divorce the other without being forced to justify it any further than “Because I want to”.
-This leaves the faithful spouse stranded on an island, unable to remarry without going through an annulment process that legions have found to be abusive.
-Being unwilling to live out the rest of his or her life in celibacy, the abandoned spouse finds a new love, and marries them in a non-Catholic ceremony.
-The new couple begins attending a new church, where they TITHE!
-Catholic Church attendance continues to plummet while Evangelical megachurches go on building booms.
And in the end, therein lies the rub.
The Vatican has determined to lure these folks back to the collection basket by any means necessary.
Pope Benedict called for smaller, poorer, holier. That was NO SALE to most of the clergy.
