There’s no shift or big change - the Church has reflected the larger society’s beliefs about homosexuality. Everyone rejected them until a few years back, not socially, but did not praise it, that’s for sure. There was no mean plan by Catholics to hurt their feelings. Going back to the 1950’s, I can recall gays in the parish and also the priesthood.
