One day back in October 2012 we woke up to the news that the mosque under construction in Poitiers, where Muslims had been defeated in 732 by the forces of Charles Martel, was in the process of being occupied by a group of young Frenchmen belonging to the Génération Identitaire, an association of patriots determined to rescue France from the latest, and possibly most threatening, Islamic invasion. The fact that the mosque was still under construction meant that it had not been consecrated, and so the young patriots did not consider themselves guilty of desecrating a sacred place when they climbed to its roof.
This was not Marine Le Pens shining moment. Rather than rush to the defense of Génération Identitaire, she backed off visibly, making it clear she did not want to be in any way associated with a group guilty of an illegal act. She only said that she understood why they had done it, but that they were one of many extreme groups in France, and she went so far as to associate them with groups hostile to France, such as SOS-Racism. It was obvious to the members of Génération Identitaire that she was not on their side, confirming their fears that Marine Le Pen, despite her claims to nationalistic and patriotic feelings, was not an anti-Islam warrior comparable to Geert Wilders. It was obvious to me that Marine had shown her hand. That she was not nearly as interested in routing Islam as she was in looking respectable.
Those were the days of the un-demonization of the Front National, when she poured all her energies into rebuilding the image of the party, and purging it of extremist elements. This proved to be a mistake on her part, though in the years following the event, she made............

If the building had been consecrated to Allah it would have been the opposite of a sacred place.
