Catholics Must Let Go of ‘Cherished Beliefs’ to ‘Discern’ like Pope Francis: U.S. Cardinal

CHICAGO, November 2, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) -- Francis-appointed U.S. Cardinal Blase Cupich said that if Catholics want to engage in “discernment” like Pope Francis does, they must let go of “cherished beliefs.”

“It is our job to take up that discernment. It takes time. It involves discipline. Most importantly it requires that we be prepared to let go of cherished beliefs and long-held biases,” said the Archbishop of Chicago in a talk to the Catholic Theological Union published on YouTube October 27.

“It is this willingness of Francis to let go of the unnecessary and explore unchartered waters that gives him internal freedom, while unsettling some,” he added.

Cardinal Cupich has rapidly risen to prominence under Pope Francis. Prior to becoming cardinal in 2016, he was appointed by Pope Francis to the influential Vatican Congregation for Bishops that recommends candidates to be appointed bishops.

Speaking on the topic of “Dialogue in the Key of Pope Francis,” Cupich praised the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin’s vision of dialogue. Bernardin was the Archbishop of Chicago until his death in 1996.

Quoting Bernardin, the Cardinal said that through dialogue “we can explore our differences and [be] assured in the understanding that neither is everything cut and dried nor is everything up for grabs.”

For anyone with 10% of a brain, this is a red flag brighter than a thousand suns.

Didn’t Hitlary tell us last year that we needed to get rid of our long-held beliefs?

Something about Romans 1:18-32 comes to mind when dealing with a culture that finally understands you cannot honor God and homosexuals at the same time (and is making the WRONG choices)...

I’m not religious, but reading on here that supposed clergymen are imploring Christians to ignore their faith is disgusting. In better days, these people would be excommunicated.

The martyrs died rather than let go of their cherished beliefs. Many of the deaths involved the most horrible of tortures, but their love was for Christ and the truths He revealed to us, not some nebulous idea of ‘discernment’ that attempts to excuse the mortal sin of adultery.

Discernment-— that’s what this sycophant calls it. For most traditional Catholics, and even wavering ones— this “discernment” really apostasy. At least this is what have heard from devout friends who are horrified at this jesuitical hierarchy, leaning to a secular non-scriptural and much worse church they do not recognize. To the point they believe Benedict is under a kind of house arrest of silencing.

“....is apostasy”. Going to watch “A Man for All Seasons” for some kind of bearing on this from history. From a time when one’s beliefs could get one killed. In the face of islamofascism, they still can- even if one is an atheist, as far as the jihadists are concerned, they are the last and final religion. And the Church of Rome produces this... thing, in response. Certainly not warriors of old.

Posted in here sometime last week was a Trib article about the proposed use of a parking lot worth tons of money. Across the street from Holy Name Cathedral. Which would become land for a multi purpose skyrise tower. The article didn’t state who the owner of the lot was.

Cupich said that Pope Francis’s papacy is defined by “dialogue,” which he said, amounts to “building bridges.

“Dialogue is not a dirty word, it’s our word,” he said.

Pure B.S.

Francis only dialogues with Islamists, abortionists, heretics, the U.N. treehuggers and advocates for population control, communist governments, etc.

It's been 411 days since Francis received a dubia from faithful Catholic Cardinals, two of whom have since expired.

He received a "filial correction" weeks ago by faithful Catholics.

He has refused to address either of the above.

He only believes in dialogue outside the Catholic Church, but forbids dialogue within the Church.

The heretic Cupich states, the Francis is "building bridges.”

The same Francis who has boasted, "It is not to be excluded that I will enter history as the one who split the Catholic Church.”

Cardinal Cupich appears to be very educated (notice I didn’t say *well* educated); he speaks a great deal, without actually saying ANYTHING of substance.

discernment is one thing,
but teaching people to abandon the faith is another.

this cardinal sounds, at least he sounds like he’s in the wrong line of work...?

James comes to mind,

3.1: “Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.”

Francis clearly thinks that the Word of God is unnecessary and needs to be jettisoned to fit in with the modern secular/atheist/islamic world. Treading down the same broad road to destruction travelled by the Methodists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Lutherans. He truly is trying to destroy the Chirch.

yes, many now-”liberal” Protestant denominations, or as i say demoninations, have gone way, way off the tracks. Certainly NOT all of them, thankfully! But PCUSA, Episcopals, several more...yes you are very correct, alas! As has “reform” Judaism.

As for conforming to this world, we do live IN this world, He gave us this world and He has his reasons for putting us in it. But, we are taught that we have purposes to pursue here, His purposes or at least His wises for us. In this sense, we are in this world but not part of it, we are here to act in and on the world without succumbing to it. Jewish people are taught that we are here (my wording) in effect as Our Creator’s (very) junior partners, to help perfect the world. in other words, it is truly Very Good...but not quite yet perfect, there’s still work to be done, and we as the caretakers are here to do it. Christians are likewise taught that we are in but not fully a part of this world, that in a certain sense (my wording again) we participate, yes, while still maintaining a certain autonomy, too, so that we may maintain and uphold His standards. Its all the same “Biblical” teaching, and it is definitely not what we’re hearing just now from the Vatican. I believe that Pope Francis could benefit from reviewing the Scriptures to find the light and spiritual strength that this “in and not of” caretaker or junior-partner role requires.........it does take both light and spiritual strength to live up to....and avoid succumbing to, conforming too much to the worldly quagmire........ John, for just one book, comes to mind, such as:
“John 15:19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you....”

If one gives up Catholic beliefs, guess what, you’re no longer Catholic.
