Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Ark of the Covenant, The Tabernacle, and The Temple

Isaiah 6 (Old Testament)

Isaiah’s Commission

6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

It was a dilemma. As Activities Director in a Jewish Nursing Home, I was responsible for providing High Holiday Services to my Residents. We had a Chapel, a Beautiful Torah in an Ark, and even a little organ (donated by my church, as they had moved on to guitars!), but I need a Rabbi or Cantor who would perform the Service. I would be happy to accompany him on the organ...just give me the sheet music, because I didn't know the tunes.

Then, the Kind and Wonderful Mr. Levine volunteered. He said he had the BOOK and would Love to have me accompany him as he presented a somewhat abbreviated version for our dear residents, some of whom were Holocaust Survivors. It would be a Mitzvah (Good Deed).

The Day approached, and Mr. Levine brought the Book and placed it on the organ. I took my seat and prepared myself to play.

Then I noticed, it was a large-print Prayer Book, with Hebrew on one side and English on the other, and it opened backwards! It was NOT Sheet Music. And the Service was about to begin.

Mr. Levine began to sing. A quick glissando on the organ ascertained that he was in E minor. I then proceeded to accompany him (Southern Black-Gospel Style), by punctuating his chanting with chords and notes, emphasizing his ancient prayers with music. Since there was no sheet music, I riveted my eyes on Mr. Levine, feeling his music through his body language, facial expressions, and the English Translations on the Right-Hand Pages of The Book. Suddenly, Mr. Levine stopped, and whispered, "This next part is acappela". I stopped playing, turned the page and saw these words from Isaiah 6:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

It was at that Moment that I realized that this is probably the ONLY Scripture passage that is a High Point of the Services of Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and Jewish People all over the World. It was an Awesome Thought.

After the Service, Mr. Levine said it was one of the BEST Rosh Hashana Services he had ever done, and we became great friends. (RIP Dear Friend!)

Your post came in while I was still writing my comments for today’s Scripture. I thought that it was a delightful coincidence that both of our posts had to do with blending modern music and Ancient Scripture.

I really LIKED “Sweet Home Jerusalem” and am impressed with the guitar-playing as well! ;-)

Shalom

Sweet Home Jerusalem!
Lyrics by Rabbi Lazer Brody and Steven Gasner

Eagles’ wings keep on flying
Carry me home to see The King
Singing songs about my City
Jerusalem you’re in my dreams
And I’m gonna sing, yes

Well I heard the UN talk about her
But a Jewish boy won’t drink this brew
Uncle Sam please remember, that
“Jerusalem won’t be split in two!”

Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem
L-rd I’m coming home to you

We’re all waiting for Mashiach
You can bet he’s coming soon
We’ll all be dancing in Jerusalem
And we’ll all be singing the same tune
Now that’s the truth

Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem
L-rd I’m coming home to you

The wise men of the Holy City
They’ve been known to pick a song or two
They help my soul when I’m hurting
They give me joy when I’m feeling blue
Now how about you?

Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem
L-rd I’m coming home to you
Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem
L-rd I’m coming home to you

Yom Teruah?

It seems that lately much of the better quality teaching I’ve received has come from messianic churches involving Jewish idioms and feast days — how Christ fulfilled them so minutely.

For instance did you know that on the Passover, after Pilate scourged Jesus, he brought him before the crowd and said, “I find no fault with him.” These same words were being announced concerning the chosen lamb for the temple service?
At 9:00am the lamb was bound to the altar, but not killed until 3:00pm. Upon its death the attending priest would announce “It is finished!”

A gift for you:

The prophetic insight of Rabbi Judah Ben Samuel. Even if you know about it, this presentation is very good.
