I think one of the reasons is the Pope Francis is a believer in “liberation theology” that arose in Latin America in the 1950’s and 60’s. I remember its mixture of Catholic doctrine and Communist doctrine being discussed at the Catholic college I attended. The Maryknoll Fathers, at that time, were one of the major sponsors of it. To me, Francis takes the anti-Americanism and anti-democracy/capitalism of it and is why he is seemingly fighting against conservative/traditional Catholicism, especially in the US.
