Luther himself was like this: A fat man who loved eating and drinking. After he had preached his heresy for a long time, he retired and went to live in Wittenberg. Every night he used to go to a tavern in the city where the small notabilities of the city gathered. He was the center of the circle. Usually the night would end in drunken revelry with Luther in such a bad state that he would be brought home on a stretcher.

Considering the disaster that is the current pope, harping on Luther seems a waste of effort

This is fascinating. The Catholics on FR once screamed bloody murder when their faith was attacked. So much so that JimRob ordered a stop to attacks on Catholicism. Yet those same Catholics think it's fine to attack other protestant faiths.

I would ask the Religion Moderator if this is acceptable?

Dr. Luther, living rent-free in Catholic heads for 500 years.

And the best you can do to argue against him is spend pages upon pages ultimately doing nothing but calling him a poopy head.

That’s hilarious, that you can’t even bring up sensible arguments without resorting to ad hominem attacks.

Whatever Luther was, "The just shall live by faith" is not heresy. It is the doctrine of scripture - the gospel of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The gospel is not man-centered nor is it dependent on the whims of man or his winds of doctrine which toss God's people to and fro by man's sleight whereby they lie in wait to deceive (Eph 4:14).

Instead, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Tim 3:16).

Excellent article, authored by a Jesuit (back when Jesuits were Catholic).

You’re wanting to start a flame war?

What? Did you wake up this morning and say to yourself, “Gee, I’m bored. Maybe I should go needlessly stir up some sh*t.”

In any case, get your asbestos shorts on because here it comes...

"...Luther is an intellectual giant, or, to use a word from Paul Althaus, an "ocean. "

The danger of drowning in him, of not being able to come to grips with him satisfactorily, arises from his tremendous output, but no less from his own original style, which we are going to take up. It sounds banal, but cannot be left unsaid: Luther belongs in the first rank of men with extraordinary intellectual creativity.

He is in the full sense a genius, a man of massive power in things religious and a giant as well in theological interpretation.

Because of this, he has in many respects shaped the history of the world--even of our world today.”

- Catholic Scholars Dialogue with Luther (Jared Wicks, S.J, Editor. 1970, Loyola University Press) 4.

You know, before the Catholic Martin Luther founded Protestantism there was a Jewish “Martin Luther” who broke away from Oral Tradition and “works righteousness” and founded his own religion as well. And his teaching was as full of contradictions as anyone’s. But something tells me any criticism of this particular “Luther” is beyond the pale here at Free Republic.

I heard somewhere that King David (a man after God’s heart) committed adultery and had the woman’s husband killed. I heard elsewhere that he was often morose and filled with doubt.

I’ve heard also that some of the so-called “prophets of God” were often stubborn & disobedient.

etc. etc...

FWIW - sounds like Luther fits right in...

What ever else Luther was he was able to read what the Vulgate said and that is what people needed to know in order to see for themselves that the appointed leaders in the church were just using religion to have dictatorial powers over the people.

I have no argument that Catholics were the first Christians after the Apostles, the only question i have is how fast did the Catholic Church turn away from Christ`s teaching and start making up their own rules?

It seems the main thing at Luther`s time was to make it as rough as they could for any common person to read the Bible
and who can blame them, when it finally happened there was a revolt.

Douay-Rheims Bible translated from the Catholic Vulgate
Mathew 23
5 And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge their fringes.

6 And they love the first places at feasts, and the first chairs in the synagogues,

7 And salutations in the market place, and to be called by men, Rabbi.

8 But be not you called Rabbi. For one is your master; and all you are brethren.

9 And call none your father upon earth; for one is your father, who is in heaven.

10 Neither be ye called masters; for one is you master, Christ.

11 He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant.

12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled: and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Mathew 20
25 But Jesus called them to him, and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that are the greater, exercise power upon them.

26 It shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be the greater among you, let him be your minister:

27 And he that will be first among you, shall be your servant.

28 Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many.

The same as the King James Bible 1200 years later.

Jerome Translated much of the Vulgate before ad 400 so was the Church more honest at that time? if not why would they let Him tell the truth?

I believe "conditional Baptism" is a way for a person to make the statement on his own vs. having "been Baptized" when a non-aware of the rite infant.

How could the public statement, much akin to a wedding ceremony and the attendant wedding bands be wrong and/or heretical?

Is it now a sin for an adult to publicly proclaim his belief in Christ?

Guess Catholics prefer popes who sell forgiveness for money, start wars, have mistresses, get their illegitimate sons to be pope, murder a pope to become pope, sold the throne to another, raped pilgrims visiting the Vatican, invoked pagan gods, murdered cardinals, held orgies, tortured people, stole money from the Church gave to relatives, etc, etc.

But sure Catholics, complain about Luther - your house sure is in order.
