‘We are the No,’ Cardinal Tobin says, vowing to support immigrants

The Archbishop of Newark, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin said, “We are the ‘no’ to a nation who is heartless, who would deport people separating them from their families and their loved ones simply because they are victims of a broken system.”

NEWARK, N.J. - Beneath the curved wooden ceiling at Bethany Baptist Church, New Jersey’s faith leaders vowed to stand alongside those targeted under the White House agenda - and build their own wall of resistance to President Trump’s policies.

“Not on our watch will anyone have to stand or fight alone,” said the church’s pastor, Timothy Jones on Thursday (May 4). “Now more than ever is the time for people of all faiths to get together to work for the joint goal of building community.”

.

Faith in New Jersey, an interfaith coalition advocating for social justice, convened imams, pastors, priests, and rabbis to urge action amid swift changes to immigration enforcement and health care.

“We cannot stand idly by, we cannot stay on the sidelines,” said Rev. John Mennel before more than 150 clergy members as Trump made his first presidential visit across the Hudson River before heading to his Bedminster golf course.

The Archbishop of Newark, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, also addressed the interfaith gathering, sharing a poignant scene from a novel about Italian fascism.

“What keeps despots, dictators awake at night, what topples evil empires is the little person who goes into the square in the middle of town in the dark of the night and scrawls on the wall, ‘No.’ and I want to say to you, we are the ‘No’ that God scrawls on the wall,” Tobin said. “We are the ‘no’ to a nation who is heartless, who would deport people separating them from their families and their loved ones simply because they are victims of a broken system.”

Catalino Guerrero, an undocumented immigrant from Union City, met with immigration officials Friday. Guerrero has an order of deportation but the community has fought to keep him in the U.S.

Tobin and U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), helped advocate for Catalino Guerrero, a Union City grandfather who was facing deportation earlier this year.

Menendez, too, spoke briefly after arriving from Washington, D.C.

“Indeed we practice different faiths … but there is far more that unites us than divides us,” he said after railing against the U.S. House passing “cruel” legislation to repeal Obamacare Thursday.

Clergy members pressed their colleagues for action to help the uninsured and on other issues as wide-ranging as climate change, the criminal justice system and gun violence - citing their faith as a basis for solidarity.

“The battle we are waging is the same for undocumented folk as it is for black folk, as it is for poor folk, as it is for folk needing health care in this country,” said Bishop Dwayne Royster, political director for PICO National Network. “We are fighting the same battles with the same people.”

Guerrero, and other undocumented immigrants facing deportation were also present Thursday as clergy members promised to stand by them.

There were also supporters of Carimer Andujar, a student advocate of undocumented immigrants at Rutgers University who was recently summoned by immigration officials and fears deportation.

“Christians believe that faith without works is dead, our faith isn’t just pie in the sky,” Tobin told NJ Advance Media. “It’s recognizing those who are struggling among us and supporting them.”

I guess I missed the part where the entire family can stay together by going to their home country and applying to come migrate to America just like anyone else.

Naive idiot. The illegals CHOOSE to separate their families when they sneak into our country. Then they want to boo hoo that they can’t be sent back and be separated from their family. It’s idiots like this Tobin who are endangering us all. In his pathetic zeal to increase his religion’s clientele, he is advocating opening doors for all illegals, even those of other religions-—other religions who have sworn to murder us. There has to be a blanket policy——if you don’t go through legal channels to get here, then get out of here. We should not welcome criminals with no respect for our sovereignty into our country and even provide them freebie food, housing, education, health care, and legal assistance against our own laws. That includes crying “Discrimination!” when we prohibit entry of people associated with terrorists.

He is really interested in getting his constituents into the country and that is all that matters to him.

I’ve always found it curious that the bishops can never find the same fighting spirit found in this article when it comes to abortion (with some exceptions of course). In fact it always seems that the bishops will rally against conservative issues without fear but in general maintain a muted stance on progressive assaults against the Church. Come Holy Spirit!

I don’t want families separated. Like most law-abiding Americans, I want illegals deported, but my hope is that the families will stay together by going home together.

I could have sworn that there are parts of New Joisey where you can actually SEE Ellis Island. Guess His Eminence knows nothing of its history. No free passes there.

Perhaps a few of his parishioners could refer him to the Prager University video from an immigrant who addresses both legals and illegals. Summary: Your left your turd world homeland because things were bad there. Don’t bring that sh!t here.

Available in both English and Spanish.

I thought Union City was part of the US. If she is from Union City, why is she not a citizen?

It is not a 'broken system', it's a 'corrupt system'. It was corrupted by heartless Democrat politicians who lie to millions of people by telling them they can sneak into our nation illegally, and then be allowed to stay, as long as they illegally vote Democrats into office. There needs to be an ironclad policy: "You will NEVER become a US citizen by breaking the law to get here."

Let’s also throw out rules on premarital sex. They’re just undocumented spouses.

Wake me up when Tobin says no to abortion.

Obviously he has no problem sucking up to the baby killers of the Democrat Party to fight the evil GOP.

Brood of Vipers member.

If someone robbed banks to support their families, would you allow them to continue breaking the law because you didn't want to deprive their children of the support? Wouldn't that also be heartless?

What about the people who have been the victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens, who would not have been victims if our laws had been enforced? Where is your helping hand to them and their families?

The man, and that is all is - a man, no better than any other man - is a dangerous liar when he says:

“We are the ‘no’ to a nation who is heartless, who would deport people separating them from their families and their loved ones simply because they are victims of a broken system.”

What is heartless and immoral is to give away illegally what millions have sacrificed and followed the law to obtain legally. Doing so is heartless. It spits at all those who followed the law, and suggests they were stupid for doing so. It suggests all they had to do was NOT come to the U.S. legally, ignore the law and just jam the shores illegally and demand some non-existent “right”.

What is “broken” has been broken not by any design or intention of the law. It is been broken by the likes of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Newark encouraging and supporting the idea that people outside the U.S. ought to be rewarded for making themselves illegal residents here. Then in it was broken by those who took the “open borders” position and chose, from outside the U.S. to turn an idea into a reality - open borders.

If only we had a Constitution and laws that qualified the Archbishops position for what it is - treasonous - and made it possible to strip him of his U.S. citizenship.

Lastly, it is the adults who came here illegally who have created situations resulting in separation of their families, and it is the same adults choosing that separation by not taking their minor children home with them.
