When John the Baptist was in Herod's prison, he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, "Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?" (Matthew 11:3). To us, this might seem like a shocking question, after all it was John who proclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). For John to start wondering if Jesus was truly the Messiah, tells us just how discouraged he became sitting in that prison cell.
1 Peter 1:7
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
The Bible provides an extensive list of men and women, who at one time or another became discouraged with the hardships of serving God. Among them are Job, Elijah, David, and the Apostle Peter, all of which went through trials that shook their faith to the core. Going through troublesome times is par for the course, and a good faith-shaking forces us to become more "child-like" in our attitude toward God, as we continue to serve Him.
Matthew 18:3
And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Galatians 6:9
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
As we go through tribulations, it's extremely important that we focus not on self but instead, "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith:"( Hebrews 12:2). We should take all of our tribulations to Jesus and be joyful that God is using them to teach us patience. If we're never tested with tragedies, sufferings or persecution how could we determine if our faith is genuine or merely superficial?
We must wait upon the Lord, we must be patient. If we don't knuckle under, if we don't faint in the Lord, then we'll come out the other side the better for it. Nothing worthwhile is easy, and experiencing real hardship is a necessity in our Christian walk because, without it, we could never experience true blessing.
James 1:2-3
2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
Psalms 30:5
For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
I’m not a King James Bible reader, but I admire your headings each time as I scroll past.
Cheers!
It is difficult to cope when prayers don’t seem to work. But I become hopeless only when I pretend it is MY will that must be carried out by God; not His will. Fear is another big faith robber.
“Just a suggestion - why don’t you put your topic in your thread title? Otherwise, there is no way to tell one of your threads from another. If I were posting this, I would have gone with this: Down in the Mouth (King James Bible Discussion).”
Art thou being difficult?
