BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The former St. Gerard Roman Catholic Church, a vacant Catholic church on Buffalo's east side, is answering a second calling. The Diocese sold the building for for $120,000 and it will be converted into a mosque.
Former pastor Father Butch Mazur says even with the current political and social climate around the country, the community should embrace the new place of worship.
"People should not be uncomfortable with having a mosque in this community. The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo has a long-standing, healthy, great relationship with the Muslim community for almost 40 years," Mazur said.
Some of the church's interior items have already been sold and church officials expect the sale to be completed sometime in the near future.
"There is an agreement to purchase this. Three men are buying the church and plan to use it as a house of worship and the sale should go through very soon. No closing date has been set but there is an agreement," said George Richert, Catholic Diocese of Buffalo's director in the office of communications.
Nearby residents say St. Gerard's was a part of the community's foundation for decades and played a big role in lives of families that attended.

The real problem is CHRISTIANS turning away from our FAITH and leaving a vacuum.
That’s what happened in Europe. The way to defeat radical Islam, is not to get rid of mosques.
It’s to turn back to Christ. And revive his church!

Every consecrated Christian Temple is meant to last until the end of the Universe! Becoming a mosque does not count! It’s better to give it to a new, struggling Orthodox or Catholic mission parish gratis than to sell it to the infidel Muhammadans!!!!
Fr. Butch seems to mean well, but it’s guys like him and his bishop who emptied the church in the first place.
nah don’t burn the building, just make deposits of pig feet, pork chop bones, ham bones...all over the place and bury some on the grounds as well.

The Catholic Church began its own demise by refusing to deal with the pedophile priests it knew it had in its midst.

approx. 5 years ago, this church building was supposed to be sold to a Christian congregation in Georgia, who were going to dismantle it, brick-by-brick, and reconstruct it in GA.
I thought it was a fanciful idea when i heard it, and I guess that proved to be the case.
I agree.Never leave the enemy anything they can use to mount an offensive against you.Thats just what they will now.
