Catholic ping!
I am glad the author wrote the following regarding going to extremes:
The question of the role of miracles in our life of faith is an important one and requires avoiding two extremes: an overemphasis and credulity regarding the supernatural on the one hand and a denial of the possibility of divine intervention and a diminishment of the role of popular devotion on the other....
A former colleague and mentor of mine, Bill, told me about a miracle that his sister had received: She had a tumor that was extremely large in her stomach (near basketball) and she was going to have removed by surgery. A couple of weeks before the surgery, she heard about a Catholic priest (she is Catholic) who traveled from parish to parish holding healing services. The priest was clear that 1) he was only the conduit and 2) healings did not always occur during his services. At the point in the Mass where the congregation came forward for the Eucharist, she knelt at the alter rail and received communion, the priest said after (I think) giving her the Host “you are the one I was sent here for.”
She got home and her husband said her body was very red, as if sunburned. A couple of days later she went to her surgeon for the final x-rays before the surgery. He told her that the tumor was gone and showed her the new x-ray and one from a few weeks before. He said he had no idea why it was gone.
I have met Bill’s sister and also heard this story from her. This is, to me, a pure miracle and gift from Our Father.
Auggie ping! Here is another ~ ‘Total abstinence is easier than perfect moderation.’
