Next Synod Will Discuss Lack of Vocations, Says Pope Francis

The Pope said vocations exist, but need to be proposed in the right way

Pope Francis has said the next synod will discuss the decline in priestly vocations. In a conversation with Jesuits published by the Jesuit journal La Civiltà Cattolica, the Pope said: “With regard to local vocations, I say that the vocational decline will be spoken of at the next Synod. I believe that vocations exist, you just have to know how to propose them and how to attend to them.”

The next Ordinary Synod will be held in October 2018, on the theme of “Youth, Faith and Vocation”. According to reports, the Pope wanted the synod to be about married priests, but the proposal was outvoted by his advisory council.

The Pope linked the lack of vocations to a refusal to “call upon the laity”. He said: “If the priest is always in a hurry, if he is involved in a thousand administrative things, if we do not convince ourselves that spiritual direction is not a clerical charism, but a lay charism (which the priest can also develop), and if we do not call upon the laity in vocational discernment, it is evident that we will not have vocations.”

The Pope also commented on the synod’s theme of “youth”, saying: “Young people need to be heard; and the young can be tiring. They always come with the same issues and you have to listen to them. And of course, for this you have to be patient, to be seated and to listen. And also to be creative: you have to put them to work on things. Today, always having meetings no longer makes much sense, they are not fruitful.”

Too much "rigidity"

The lack of vocations is not uniform across the world nor within countries. Some seminaries are full......and some are empty (including in Francis' previous diocese of Buenos Aires). If he's serious about solving this problem, all he has to do is ask those who have them. It aint difficult.

I smell a rat. This will be another orchestrated fiasco with a pre-determined result. It will be a pretext for an assault on seminaries, just as the previous Synod was an assault on marriage.

Few vocations for diocesan priests but plenty for religious orders.

Fortunately Pius XI provided pretty well all the necessary analysis back in 1935 in his encyclical on the priesthood. bhttps://w2.vatican.va/content/pius-xi/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xi_enc_19351220_ad-catholici-sacerdotii.html

I don’t think that there is too much that could be added, and very little that needs to be added, to this encyclical, with the exception of docile readers.

For a few religious orders. The majority of houses in the majority of orders in the west could easily be mistaken for old age homes.

I suspect that many seminarians are dissuaded (or rejected) in reaction to the predominately homosexual orientation of certain orders in certain countries, e.g., the American Jesuits. But perhaps I am being rigid.

Vocations decline directly with the liberalization of the church and the seminaries.

**I smell a rat. This will be another orchestrated fiasco with a pre-determined result. **

So true. The local seminary has over 150 seminarians, all straight and dedicated to the Lord.

Thanks to Pope Benedict XVI.

Don’t undo this wonderful trend, Pope Francis.

The stricter more traditional orders have more vocations. That is magnified in the convents. The traditional orders that wear full habit and concentrate on prayer are young orders. The ones that “modernized” including abjuring the habit are all begging for alms to support their aged and retired members. There are no young nuns in them.

Actually vocations have been rising since the crazy modernism of post VII got tamped down and the dancing girls disappeared from liturgies.

Read the book , “Goodbye, Good Men: How Liberals Brought Corruption into the Catholic Church “ by Michael S Rose, to get an feel for why there is a lack of people stepping up for the vocations.

The book was written in 2002 and things have only gotten worse since then.

I seriously doubt that Pope Francis will thumb through the pages any time soon.

Indeed. The proposals were all penned by some renegade cleric 30 years ago who Bergoglio got all atwitter about back then. He has proved to the Catholic Church that he is unfit to lead a synod.

Michael Rose defined the Bergoglio cleric in authority who deprived seminaries of future holy priests.

I think your last synod might have something to do with it. That and the fact that there are a lot of wolves in sheep’s clothing, and we’re not blind.

Priests remain unmarried in the Catholic Church to dedicate their lives fully to God.

Exceptions include many converts who were already married, but decided to become Catholic and then decided to become Catholic priests.

There it is. We did to ourselves what Caesar, Napoleon, Stalin, Mao, Castro and countless tyrants throughout the ages could not.
