“Let us Free Ourselves from the Heavy Burdens of Fundamentalism and Hate” [Assisi]
La Stampa-Vatican Insider ^ | 9/20/16 | Andrea Tornielli

In his final speech in Assisi, Francis said “no” to “the paganism of indifference”. “Our path leads us to immersing ourselves in situations and giving first place to those who suffer; to taking on conflicts and healing them from within”

“No” to a “paganism of indifference”, “our path leads us to immersing ourselves in situations and giving first place to those who suffer; to taking on conflicts and healing them from within… let us free ourselves from the heavy burdens of fundamentalism and hate”. In the heart of Assisi, warmed by the afternoon sun, Pope Francis, along with hundreds of men and women of different world faiths, concluded the peace meeting organised by the Community of Sant’Egidio. Patriarchs, bishops and pastors, rabbis and imams, representatives of Shintoism, Buddhism and Indian faiths refused to give in to violence, hatred and the ideology of wars falsely proclaimed in the name of religion.

In his address, Andrea Riccardi, the founder of the Community of Sant’Egidio, explained that the image of religious leaders gathered in the name of peace “is a bright image” that unmasks those who use the name of God to wage war and spread terror”. 30 years ago, in 1986, John Paul II convened another such meeting, where “he had the courage to invite those who for millennia were considered outsiders”.

The religious leaders listened to people’s accounts of war. Before the war, Tamar Mikalli, a Christian woman from Aleppo, worked as a teacher. “I am from Aleppo, Syria’s martyr city,” she says. “Aleppo – it breaks my heart to say this name… I remember the many Muslim and Christian friends I had there. Now distinctions are made between Christians and Muslims but before the war there were no differences… Then the war broke out, I’m still not quite sure why. Missiles........

KEYWORDS:
Note the juxtaposition of the words "fundamentalism" and "hate". Reminiscent of Francis' words during a recent mid-air press conference. When asked about Islamic violence, Francis replied that Christianity and Catholicism in particular, has its own "fundamentalists".

This is the lead general of a military junta that violently over threw a democratically elected government. I can’t believe we mess with this dictator.

Let’s start with the fundamentals. We know very little beyond particle physics.

When you have differing groups with their own fundamental view beyond science, you have arguments based on beliefs with no facts.

Hate is a whole other subject and practiced by morons.

We know very little beyond particle physics.

Speak for yourself, but not for others.

Hi, soy.

Anyone who has touched, heard, seen, tasted or thought about anything, knows a lot more than the concepts of particle physics.

Where do you get this droll idea that "we" know very little beyond particle physics? Can you prove that?

Are you sure you didn't post this to the wrong thread? This is about a prayer meeting in Assisi (Italy). There's nothing here about Sisi (Egypt).

Or did I miss something?

“No” to a “paganism of indifference”

Thus spake the indifferentist-in-chief and aficionado-of-weird-juxtapositions.

Let’s start with the fundamentals. We know very little beyond particle physics.

You've got it backwards. Knowledge starts with experience, and we have no immediate experience of particle physics. It is an extremely abstract and elaborate inference based on difficult and obscure experimental results. The immediate knowledge consists in the familar experience of "knobs and dials", or these days, glowing screens and keyboards. We can never escape the subjective. This is in Plato.
