Is There Room in the Catholic Church for Those Who Don’t Believe Islam is a Religion of Peace?
Frontpage ^ | Robert Spencer

Last Wednesday, I had a lively discussion with Msgr. Stuart Swetland, president of Donnelly College in Kansas City, Kansas, on Relevant Radio’s Drew Mariani Show, on whether or not Islam was a religion of violence. Msgr. Swetland argued not only that Islam was a religion of peace, but that to believe otherwise was to place oneself in opposition to the teaching of the Catholic Church.

Now, I’m a Catholic. But if Msgr. Swetland is correct, I may not be one for long.

Msgr. Swetland has now helpfully supplied me with remarks clarifying his position and supporting it with statements of various Popes and the Second Vatican Council. Msgr. Swetland contends that statements of recent Popes to the effect that Islam is a religion of peace fall into the category of teachings to which Catholics must give “religious assent,” as per the Second Vatican Council document Lumen Gentium, which states: “In matters of faith and morals, the bishops speak in the name of Christ and the faithful are to accept their teaching and adhere to it with a religious assent.”

Catholics have a long and noble tradition of helping to create Western civilization. They also have a long and noble tradition of defending Western Civilization from Islam.

The examples are too many to cite in this short space but read about The Battle of Vienna and the many other times Catholics fought to defend their way of life.

The Catholic tradition is contains many denunciations of Islam as violent.

Western civilization flourished during that time.

Today, there are some in positions of influence in the Catholic hierarchy say that Catholics are required to say the Islam is the religion of peace.

This goes against the historical record and the wisdom of centuries.

Wisdom of centuries = the truth

I would consider those members of the hierarchy to be dissident infiltrators.

You would have to be an intellectually lazy Catholic to think you had to believe a lie just because a Priest, Monsignor, Bishop, Cardinal, or Pope said it was the truth.

I would think that believing islam is the religion of the anti-Christ would be mandatory for any Christian church.

At BEST, it’s a variation of mood god worship going on at the time.

AT WORST, it’s what you said.

Where in the Koran, their Allah loves unconditionally the non-believers? Sure, Islam is the religion of peace, & they will kill to prove it!

It is also dangerously close to capitulation to Islam’s demands for dominance, when a religion that kills critics says you have to say we’re peaceful and that faith’s leader agrees.

The Catholic church left Catholics years ago.

You would think that would be the case, but in this day and time, who knows for sure?

Muslims do not believe that Jesus died on the cross as the Bible says in Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, and John 19 . Muslims differ among themselves as to exactly how Jesus escaped from death. A key Qur’an verse is as follows:
“That they said (in boast), “We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Apostle of Allah”;- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not:-Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise” (Surah 4:157-158) Does the Catholic church agree with this?

Msgr. Swetland argued not only that Islam was a religion of peace, but that to believe otherwise was to place oneself in opposition to the teaching of the Catholic Church.

That's the kind of response I'd expect from a dictator, not someone who is supposed to give a reasoned, cogent, response to the question.

Even the saints in the past had spoken very harsh about Islam. Would they be called dissenters?

The pastor at my Catholic Church refers to it as, ‘that belief that the Muslims refer to as a religion’. We are not required to look at it as a religion.

Who made this guy a Msgr.? And show me where the Church teaches this as a tenet of our faith?

Islam is from the devil. There I said it!

John said it first: "By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already." (I John 4:2-3 ESV)

Agreed. Allah is an impersonal singularity knowable only to mystical Imam, meaning Islam is only peaceful if Imams say it is. So what does a nature worship system have to do with Jesus Christ and His Church?
