I don't read too much evil into games. Cards were "evil" hundreds of years ago. In a sense, they are correct in saying this because a game can distract you from life e.g. gambling obsession, video game obsession. According the the church, you should be serving God, not your own indulgences.

Cards and the now-simplified symbols on them were ancient tools of divination or communication with spirits or occult messages, so you can see the connotation of evil associated with them.
