2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Scholars and theologians have filled libraries with commentaries on the aspects and symbolism included in this story. Discussions about the role of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, the vessels used for ceremonial washing, the difference between the Old and New Covenants, and the alcohol content of the wine(!) have even been subjects of contention here on FR. So, instead of that, let's look at how John, a guest at the wedding, reports the first Public Miracle of Jesus.

John once again narrates his story like a true eyewitness, including intimate conversations, back-room procedures, and private insights. From later in our readings, we will read that John unabashedly leaned on Jesus both emotionally and physically. For him to have heard a private conversation between Jesus and His Mother, John must have been very close. He may have even trailed behind Jesus into the room with the huge water jugs, and then followed again to hear the conversation with the Wine Steward.

He does not "interpret", but faithfully reports everything to us so that we can glean all we can from this event.

The Miracle at Cana did more than save the Bride and Groom from embarrassment, or even to keep the Servants out of trouble for not ordering enough wine for the feast. It shows us the relationship with Jesus and His Family, His Disciples, His Friends, and even the workers, servants, waiters, and guests. It also shows us the incredible closeness and love that John had for the Master.

I remember our Pastor made a comment about these verses during Mother’s Day. Mary asked Jesus to remedy the lack of wine, Jesus reminding her His time had not come.

Hence, you have the two greatest forces in the universe with opposing wills at this wedding: the Son of God and mother.

Mother won. ;)
