Is this the end of Catholicism?
New York Post ^ | June 5, 2016 | Naomi Schaefer Riley

“This was harder than I thought it would be,” Margaret O’Brien told a CBS reporter last weekend. O’Brien, 86, had been one of the hundred or so parishioners holding a round-the-clock vigil at St. Frances X. Cabrini church in Scituate, Mass.

Eleven years ago the Boston Archdiocese announced that it was closing the parish, a reorganization necessitated by the financial settlements after the clergy sex-abuse scandal. The parishioners at St. Frances have tried to alter the hierarchy’s decision using canon law as well as the US legal system, maintaining a presence in the building so it would not be sold out from under them.

What’s striking about St. Frances, though — in addition to the fact that it has stayed open longer than the other congregations that have protested these closure decisions — is the amazing level of commitment demonstrated by its congregants. For a hundred people to rotate shifts every day of the year for 11 years is nothing short of miraculous, particularly in our modern era. At a time when there are so many things besides faith that are competing for our attention, the parishioners at St. Frances prioritized religious life in a way that most Americans do not.

The faithful Catholic laity keep the church going.

The hierarchy has a terrible record. They promoted and protected homosexual priests. They ignored they laity and wasted their contributions. The promoted leftist social programs. They closed the churches that were built and maintained through the sacrifice of faithful Catholics.

The faithful and devout are often ignored by the hierarchy. They only hear from them when they are asking for money. Usually through a video or audio tape.

Its merely yet another organization that is concerned with everything but its actual members.

Sound familiar?

We need to remember Christ’s words:

Exactly.

The headline is wishful thinking on the part of the Church’s enemies.

“While the hierarchy has expressed its hope that the St. Frances congregants will join other local parishes, they say they are done. Starting next week, the members will be forming a religious institution independent of the church, meeting initially at the local masonic lodge.”

Huh?

It is relatively rare but a few Catholic Churches actually had the church building titled to the parish rather than the Diocese.

A few of these balked the Bishop and refused to transfer the title to the Diocese so that it could be sold.

But the building being titled to the organization of the parish and not the Diocese has an advantage. The laity has no vow of obedience to the Bishop as does a priest so the parish has no obligation to obey the Bishop and turnover an asset to an individual that did not act in good faith and thus led the Diocese in to legal peril.

The Boston diocese was pure scum with their closings. In order to pay off the lawsuits for abuse, the decisions were made, not by the strength of a diocese, but by how much the real estate is worth.

Real estate in Scituate is very expensive. Selling that property should pay off a lot of lawsuits.

Do we have the right to challenge just why so-called "progressives" have been absolutely adamant in their determination to establish choke points which result in eliminating "freedom to choose" for parents of school age children in America?

Is it that eliminating the teaching of faith in a Higher Power is at the root of their fear of parental choice?

“Despotism may govern without faith, but liberty cannot. Religion is much more necessary in the republic which they set forth in glowing colors than in the monarchy which they attack; it is more needed in democratic republics than in any others. How is it possible that society should escape destruction if the moral tie is not strengthened in proportion as the political tie is relaxed? And what can be done with a people who are their own masters if they are not submissive to the Deity?” - Tocqueville

Although my posts have included many quotations from a Black Ohio State Legislator and A.M.E. Bishop who was invited to address a Centennial Celebration of the Declaration of Independence in the Year 1876, I challenge readers of this thread to visit the Library of Congress web site and to read the entire Sermon, as it documents, and invalidates much of "progressive" ideology.

In that Address/Sermon, Dr. Benjamin W. Arnett stated:

"Withdraw from Christendom the Bible, the Church with its sacraments and ministry, and Christian morality and hopes, and aspirations for time and eternity; repeal all the laws that are founded in the Christian Scriptures; remove the Christian humanities in the form of hospitals and asylums, and reformatories and institutions of mercy utterly unknown to unchristian countries; destroy the literature, the culture, the institutions of learning, the art, the refinement, the place of woman in her home and in society, which owe their origin and power to Christianity; blot out all faith in Divine Providence, love, and righteousness; turn back every believer in Christ to his former state; remove all thought or hope of the forgiveness of sins by a just but gracious God; erase the name of Christ from every register it sanctifies—in a word annihilate all the legitimate and logical effects of Christianity in Christendom—just accomplish in fact what multitudes of gifted and learned minds are wishing and trying to accomplish by their science, philosophy, and criticism, and what multitudes of the common people desire and seek, and not only would all progress toward and unto perfection cease, but not one of the shining lights of infidelity would shine much longer. Yes, the bitterest enemies of this holy and blessed religion, owe their ability to be enemies to its sacred revelations - to the inspiration and sublimity of that faith which reflects its glories on their hostile natures. They live in the strength of that which they would destroy. They are raised to their seats of opportunity and power by the grace of Him they would crucify afresh; and is it to be thought that they are stronger than that which gives them strength? Can it be supposed that a religion which civilizes and subdues, and elevates and blesses will succumb to the enmities it may arouse and quicken in its onward march? Are we to tremble for the ark of God when God is its upholder, and protector, and preserver?” - Dr. Benjaming W. Arnett, St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Urbana, Ohio, Centennial Thanksgiving Sermon, November 1876. Arnett's "Sermon" is available in the "Library of Congress - Historical Collections" - "African-American Pamphlets from the Daniel A. P. Murray Collection," 1820-1920; American Memory, Washington, DC.

Before a priest can be ordained he must take a vow of obedience to the bishop. In order to keep this vow a priest must obey the wishes of his bishop not the needs of his parishioners.

Most parish priests are good and holy men. They sacrifice and serve their parishioners.

The hierarchy are often dishonest. They ignore the needs of faithful Catholics.

I’ve been involved intimately in one of these mergers. Attendance is usually only about 20% of registered parishioners. The money to maintain them is simply not there. And there often aren’t enough Priests to go around. It’s one thing to sit in a Church for a couple hours to keep it from closing. It’s quite another to reach into one’s pocket to make sure it can sustain itself.

Bergoglio will pull the rope that rings the bell tolling the death watch for the Roman Catholic Church....as we knew it.

The decline began with Vatican II that ushered in an entirely new era for the Church and a brand new religion that dealt with humanism and very little of Godly things.

All ‘popes’ subsequent to Pope Pius XII are guilty of the sin of allowing, and even in most cases, encouraging the destruction of Catholicism. The foundation of the Church was laid by Jesus Christ the Son of God and St. Peter was to watch over it and hand down the Keys to The Kingdom to a successor which practice was to continue until the Second Coming.

What miserable stewards we have had that will owe an explanation to their Maker that I would predict would not be accepted.

The scandalous behavior of these popes knew no bounds. The actions of Cardinals, Bishops and parish priests were beyond disgraceful. The main function of saving souls and preserving tenets and liturgy were abandoned in favor of political and heretical action.

From the article:

The parish was not closed because it was not being supported. The parish was closed to sell the real estate to pay for the legal settlements caused by homosexual priests.

The parish priests I know and work with are good and holy men. There sacrifice and commitment create much good. Your attacks on them are dishonest and contemptible..

This church sits on a very large parcel of land a stones throw from the ocean. I’m sure their are builders itching to get their hands on it.
In the neighboring town of Cohasset, the church owns property, on the ocean, worth untold millions.

Apparently the parishioners were willing to contribute financially as well. The parish was free of debt and had even raised the possibility of opening up a Catholic school for the community.

So this means that the parish had a positive balance in their bank account.

So the parish being dissolved the Diocese will also get a bank account flush with cash along with property.

The Bishop has more than one reason dissolve the parish.

I haven’t attacked ALL Novus Ordo priests, but you know full well what’s happened to the Church!

Perhaps you’re the contemptible one for standing by and not voicing an opinion about the creation of the new religion!

One thing that was not spoken about here is the tort lawyers that brought about this matter of millions of dollars in settlements against the Diocese.

The Diocese itself was not at fault for the abuse of children it was individual priest.

The Diocese itself was not at fault for shuffling known pedophile priest from parish to parish it was Bishops.

But an individual priest or Bishop does not have millions of dollars of assets that can be seized in a negligence law suit.

I am not a big believer in collective guilt. I am a believer in personal responsibility. The individual priest molested those children and the individual Bishop and his subordinates were individually responsible for covering up the facts once they were aware of those facts.

When a crime is committed it is committed by an individual not an organization. For an organization to commit a crime all or at least the majority of that organization would have to be complicit in the crime. In any case such a crime would quickly come to light because someone would come clean about the crime.

The individual parishioners did not know about the pedophile priest nor did they participate in the cover up or support the reassignment of the priest to other parishes where he might continue his abuses.

The only reason for the suit against the Church is to line the pockets of lawyers.

Collective guilt goes against every founding principle of this nation.
