Years later,South Buffalo (Pa) officer honored for "unknowingly" saving man's life

South Buffalo police Officer Jeff Kuntz vaguely remembers driving down a secluded lane to check on a site sometimes targeted for theft.

He couldn't see it from the main road and didn't know until he got to the end of the lane that night in 2009 if anyone else was there.

There was. His patrol car headlights soon shone on a down-on-his-luck young man sitting in a minivan.

Kuntz had no way of knowing that his attention to duty and compassion that night would stop the man in his early 20s from committing suicide.

“The man had a lot of (stolen) electronics as well as commercial credit cards and some church credit cards. There were also several warrants out on him, so I arrested him,” Kuntz said.

Years after his arrest, the one-time Uniontown area man, who is remaining anonymous, decided to tell someone just how Kuntz, 41, of West Kittanning, saved his life that night.

“I unknowingly interrupted, I guess, his plans to commit suicide by overdose,” Kuntz said.

While Kuntz was arresting the man he also shared his faith in God and told the man he could have a future.

The suspect was wanted for arrest in several places and eventually served a prison term. Yet Kuntz's words got through to him.

The man started to set his life right.

He eventually shared his story with Catholic Charities of Greensburg.

We just never know how the words we say will impact someone -maybe even years later. God Bless this officer and the young man.

Used to live near there. Still read the Valley News. This story touched my heart especially considering the horrible press police officers have been given.
