Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Peter

(The Gospel According to John)

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

(John 13)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This Passage from John (who depicts himself in the Narrative as "The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved"), shows us a little more about Peter than one would think at first. Here they are, a group of men who had dropped everything and followed the Teacher for three years, reclining around the table, celebrating the ancient Jewish Passover. There is a lot of heavy, unleavened food, and lots of wine, not only for the Seder itself (which requires at least four full cups) but as the beverage served with the meal. The mood is supposed to be joyous, but Jesus shocked them all when he washed all their feet like some kind of Servant. The normal Haggadah has been punctuated by talk of the "End of Days" and other deep, dark, subjects, and then Jesus drops this BOMBSHELL: "One of You will Betray Me."

After what happened at Caesaria Philippi, Peter wasn't about shoot off his mouth again, so he asks John, who is sitting right next to Jesus in a Brotherly way, "Ask Him what He means by that!"

Jesus answers in an oblique way, because dipping the food into the salty broth is part of the ceremony, and so was a perfectly natural gesture and would reveal the traitor in an unobtrusive manner. Thus was Peter informed discreetly.

Even with this exposure, however, Judas had already become possessed by the evil one, and was going to do what he was going to do even after being exposed.

This little scene does much to show us the inner dynamics of the relationship of the Disciples with each other as well as their relationship to the Master.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

Stained Glass
Basilique Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Moulins

_ HEN Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Numbers 6: 23 Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: The Lord bless you, and keep you [protect you, sustain you, and guard you]; The Lord make His face shine upon you [with favor], And be gracious to you [surrounding you with lovingkindness];The Lord lift up His countenance (face) upon you [with divine approval],And give you peace [a tranquil heart and life]. 27 So Aaron and his sons shall put My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

And this we do and proclaim and agree in Jesus name. Amen.
