Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
Peter
(The Gospel According to John)
13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet?
7 Jesus replied, You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.
8 No, said Peter, you shall never wash my feet.
Jesus answered, Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.
9 Then, Lord, Simon Peter replied, not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!
10 Jesus answered, Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you. 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. Do you understand what I have done for you? he asked them. 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one anothers feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
(John 13)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
We have a funny expression in English:
"I would love to have been a fly on the wall for THAT!"
In this Passage, the Evangelist John is doing that for us. We witness the moments before the Passover Seder which Christians call "The Last Supper". In wealthier homes, the Host would have a servant wash his guests' feet upon arrival. Now I have to tell you, even in modern-day cities in the Middle East, that would have been a particularly nasty job. It gets extremely dusty, there are donkeys and camels everywhere, and people only wear sandals! What Jesus does is radical and unexpected, yet He tells us that He is being an "Example" for us all.
What we are looking at in our study though, is Peter's reaction to this open, astounding act of humility and love. He PROTESTS it! Why would he attempt to stop Jesus from washing his feet? Did he think he was able to do it himself? Did he think he was more sinful than the other Disciples? Did he think that, although they may have been worthy, he wasn't? Unfortunately "False Humility" is a form of Pride! Singling oneself out as a worse sinner, less worthy than everybody, or even too bad to ever be redeemed by the Love of Christ is a sin in and of itself. Jesus CHOSE to wash His Disciples' feet, and he was the Master, so be it. For Peter to attempt to single himself out as "unworthy" was wrong. They (and we) were ALL unworthy, and we are not to reject Christ's ministrations to us because we think we don't deserve it (we DON'T!).
Jesus patiently explains this to Peter, and our friend still doesn't get it! At this point he wants a whole BATH.
We shouldn't be too harsh on Peter. I believe that the Gospels let us in on his gaffes for a reason. When we get to the Book of Acts, we will see a New Peter, and the contrast is amazing.
Stay Tuned.

Numbers 6: 23 Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: The Lord bless you, and keep you [protect you, sustain you, and guard you]; The Lord make His face shine upon you [with favor], And be gracious to you [surrounding you with lovingkindness];The Lord lift up His countenance (face) upon you [with divine approval],And give you peace [a tranquil heart and life]. 27 So Aaron and his sons shall put My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.
And this we do and proclaim and agree in Jesus name. Amen.

God tells us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem in Psalm 122:6-9: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels. For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, Peace be within you. For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity.
From this passage, we see that praying for peace and good to come to Gods holy city benefits those who pray. God promised blessings on those who bless Israel and curses on those who curse her (Genesis 12:3), and since Jerusalem is depicted as the center of Jewish life, it follows that those who pray for her peace and security will be granted peace themselves.
Praying for the peace of Jerusalem is most appropriate for a city whose name literally means peaceful and which is the residence of the God of peace. The phrase peace be upon Israel is found also at the end of Psalm 125:5 and 128:6, indicating that it was a common farewell blessing. Further, Jerusalem will be the scene of Christs return (Acts 1:11; Zechariah 14:4), and at that time He will establish permanent peace with its walls. All Christians should be eagerly awaiting His return and praying for the time when the Prince of Peace will reign in Jerusalem.
Jesus also said that we should be peacemakers, which would include praying for peace.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God (Matthew 5:9). And we are commanded to do our best to live at peace with others. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men (Romans 12:18). So, God wants us to seek peace among all people, and that would include praying for peace in Jerusalem, especially because of its special place in His heart.
