Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
Peter
(The Gospel According to Matthew)
18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
(Matthew 18)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Even though Peter is not specifically named in this story, it is very relevant to our study of his character.
As we have seen earlier, Jesus had taken three men out of the Twelve and shared with them some incredible things. The mother of two of these Disciples (James and John) actually tried to "lobby" for them to receive special honor, to sit on Jesus right and left when He became King.
Rather than being thoroughly embarrassed by their mom's behavior, the Disciples continued to argue over which one was the Greatest.
Since we already know that Peter had been raised to a position of leadership, and that he had an impetuous tongue, it is highly likely that he had been involved in at least some of these arguments.
Jesus puts a stop to the argument by telling them that they must become like little children in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Children do not have "Past Performance Records", nor do they have preconceived notions about spiritual matters.
Jesus tells us that this is the way we need to approach God.
