Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
Peter
(The Gospel According to Matthew)
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. Never, Lord! he said. This shall never happen to you!
23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Fathers glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
28 Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
(Matthew 16)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Poor Peter! I'll bet he didn't see THAT coming! The question remains through the ages. Was Jesus talking to Satan in Peter's presence? Or was He calling Peter "Satan" as if Peter was possessed when he made his rash statement?
Why would Jesus say something so "harsh" to a disciple who had clearly risen to a position of leadership? The answer is in the context.
Prior to this event, Peter had been among the select trio of disciples to witness the truly miraculous. The raising of Jairus's daughter from the dead, The huge catch of fish, and, most of all, the Transfiguration, put Peter in a unique position of actually SEEING the Power of the Almighty manifested in the Person of Jesus. The confession of Faith at Caesarea Philippi seemed to seal the deal, so to speak. The context also says that Jesus had been sharing this information about His Death and Resurrection for a while. It was not a sudden reversal of the Master's Teaching.
So, Peter's blurted out denial of the Messiah's Mission was either foolish, disingenuous flattery, or it was inspired by the evil one himself, in a vain attempt to sandbag or sideline the Redemption of Mankind. Emotional outbursts can be very effective is messing up the order of things.
From the reaction of Jesus, we see that it was indeed Satan who was influencing Peter. Otherwise, if it were just a "misunderstanding", Jesus would have known that too, and would have comforted Peter instead of rebuking him.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Peace by persuasion has a pleasant sound, but I think we should not be able to work it. We should have to tame the human race first, and history seems to show that that cannot be done.

I like Mark Twain. He is right about taming the human race. It is NOT possible, in human terms, of course.
But I like the Bible better. And Psalm 122 gives instruction to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (And, by extension, everyone else!)
So, that is what we do.

El Elohe Yisrael I ask you to grant peace to Israel. I ask you to extend your hand of compassion and mercy into the areas of destruction where men, women and children are being injured and killed, and to rescue them. I pray for your power in the midst of chaos, along with your grace. I lift up to you the government of Israel as well as the military and pray that your kingdom agenda will be made manifest within these entities. Bring the Israelite people to a saving knowledge of you, and protect them as they defend their people. I bless Israel in your name today, El Elohe Yisrael and ask you to bless them as well. And give me your heart for Israel. In Christs name, amen.

Say to Aaron and his sons, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them, The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you; The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you; The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually). And they shall put My name upon the Israelites, and I will bless them.

Yeah, back from Bermuda and slow to reply.
Jerusalem, as a symbol for the whole of humanity, deserves the sincerest of prayers for peace. It is surely the true meaning of Jesus's mission.
