(The Gospel According to Luke)

5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,

We Pray For the People and Leaders of Israel,

We Also Pray For Revival in our own Beloved USA.


We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

As I mentioned earlier, the Gospels differ in detail, as they came from different points of view. Both Matthew and Mark give a very brief account of Peter's first encounter with Jesus, but Luke, a very educated and loquacious Greek Physician, gives us more details, along with dialog.

Imagine being in the fishing business, probably all your life, and probably coming from a long line of fishermen for generations. You, your brothers, your neighbor, and his sons too are actually a small business, serving the community in a dangerous but very important profession. My own Dad was the son of a Gloucester Commercial Fisherman, and he and his brothers spent their childhood summers in the North Atlantic, swabbing decks and gutting cod. Mine was the first generation to go into other professions, but I really do identify with Peter's lifestyle.

Now, along comes this Carpenter from Nazareth, a hilltop town in the middle of the desert, with even a worse reputation for worthlessness than the Galilee Region. There was even a saying, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?", which made it even more ironic that this Man was telling him, Peter, the experienced supervisor of fishing operation, how to catch fish! They had been fishing all night, in the part of the lake that the fish gathered, and the whole night was a waste. Now they were tired, wanted breakfast, and had nothing to show for a night's hard work.

Peter, ever the "loudmouth" instantly appraises the Stranger of this fact. Yet, there is something about the Stranger, and Peter calls him "Master" and obeys him, taking the boat to deep water in the sunshine, a practice which would probably not catch any fish at all. Peter was being obedient, even though his expertise, judgement, and experience told him that this was a futile endeavor.

Of course, you know the rest of the story. The Miraculous Catch of Fish provides the area with more than they can handle. It is at that point that Peter exclaims, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man!". Again, Peter's impetuousness comes through. Of COURSE he was a sinful man, and of course, Jesus KNEW he was a sinful man, yet Jesus chose him and his brother and associates to become "Fishers of Men".

And, to this very day, the symbol of Christianity is a FISH.
