How should We Then Live (Video Series)
You Tube ^ | 1977 | Schaeffer, Francis

I think the examination of the emphasis upon sexuality and hedonism in the late Roman Empire and Modern Western society is both fascinating and scary.

These are somewhat dry productions but contain a lot of truth.

This series a few years ago provided me with a huge amount of education in theology, and still gives me answers to atheists today.

Much appreciated. Francis Schaeffer's work did more to re-energize apologetics, in the late 1960's and 1970's than just about anyone. His "The God Who is There," and other works were highly influential at a time when your average fundamental congregation was more isolated from the culture than even at present. He made C.S. Lewis works (among others) acceptable and tossed a lifesaver to a drowning throng of people cut off from each other in a storm.

He made higher criticism acceptable to people at a time when anti-intellectualism were fashionably reactionary. While his arguments were hardly perfect he helped millions toward methods of discussion that underpinned a revival that is still going on. When you hear a fundamentalist (and Schaeffer was not ashamed of defending scripture and Bibliocentric life) use terms like "worldview" Schaeffer can be credited. He was the first to describe, in broad but largely accurate outline, the conquest of the surrounding culture by Hegelian synthesis over Aristotle's dialectic after 1848 to the 1920's.

Not perfect, hardly, but he wedged open a barricaded door and put himself in the way of those who preferred to pull the covers over their head in a burning house.

I am one of those who greatly benefitted from his work. I started reading him about the time he died. Looking back that was the beginning of a profound shift in my understanding and thinking. In my early twenties I read all of his books at least twice.

Just a few weeks back I told my daughter she would enjoy this video series. I haven’t seen it in in at least twenty years, so I think I will watch it with her.
