Mercy is good and the Divine Mercy is a devotion which Sister Faustina communicated to us on behalf of Our Lord and is approved by the Church so I'm sure Benedict is comfortable with "mercy talk" per se. It's just that some aspects of "Francis-mercy", which he highlights in the interview, are poison for the Church.

I also don't think Benedict wants to come over as an embittered former Pope who regrets quitting his job nor to be seen as implying that Francis is 100% wrong on everything. He always speaks in a balanced and rational manner, unlike the current incumbent.
