LJUBLJANA - More than 60 percent of Slovenian voters opposed legalizing gay marriage in a referendum Sunday marked by low turnout, according to near-complete results from the electoral commission.
The outcome marked a setback for gay rights activists who had hoped to see the largely Catholic nation become Europe's first ex-communist country to give same-sex couples the right to marry and adopt.
With 99.9 percent of ballots counted, 63.48 percent of voters said 'no' to approving the legislation, which already passed in parliament earlier this year.
More than 1.7 million people were registered to vote on an issue that has stoked heated debate in the former Yugoslav republic, but turnout was low at just 36.18 percent.
For the outcome to be legally valid, opponents of the law needed to muster the support of at least 20 percent of registered voters - the equivalent of at least 342,000 votes. They ended up garnering 391,818, the commission said.
According to Ljudmila Novak, a senior member of the conservative Nova Slovenija party, said the "message is clear".
"We need to protect the rights of children," she said. "We agree with providing the appropriate rights for homosexuals, while preserving the family as the primary environment for children."
In March, parliament approved legislation redefining marriage as a "union of two" instead of a "union of a man and a woman", granting homosexual couples the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts, including the right to adopt children.

Let’s hope they don’t have a Supreme Court that reverses the wishes of the majority.
Color revolution coming up. Sanctions and NATO bombing if necessary.
How long before they are subjected to UN sanctions as human rights violators?
Good for Slovenia...
Isaiah 5:20-24
20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:
23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Good for them. At least wisdom still lives somewhere in the world.
Donald Trump’s wife, Melania Knauss, was born and raised in Slovenia (she is now a naturalized U.S. citizen since 2006). Melania speaks 5 languages fluently, and was a design/architecture student at University in Slovenia, before becoming a model. Talented, well educated and beautiful, who could ask for anything more? No wonder The Donald was attracted to her (he said it was love practically at first sight for him).
Melania sat for an interview a while back.
She handled the exchange quite well.
I thought her comments on raising Baron were great. She seemed like a doting mom, very content to play that role.
Looking back to Rosalyn Carter, Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama, this woman will be a shining star compared to them.
They did not remove themselves from Soviet domination only to take on the shackles of the samesexers.
That’s neat about his wife. She is very pretty.
Maybe it was love at first sight for Donald but Melania wouldn’t even him her phone number. LOL
well, I remember California having a referendum on something like that, but passing laws doesn’t matter. Enforcing laws is another thing.
Glad to see the outcome, after the Pope’s prompting to vote it down.
Slovenia is a beautiful country, hope to go there some day.
Tito was no Soviet stooge.
Leni
You bet...
