Vatican says Catholics should not try to convert Jews and should fight anti-Semitism

CARDINAL KOCH & RABBI ROSEN

Catholics should not try to convert Jews and should work with them to fight anti-Semitism, the Vatican said on Thursday in a major document drawing the Church further away from the strained relations of the past.

It was the latest move on a host of issues, such as gay rights and re-marriage, that the Vatican or Pope Francis have made showing a desire to be more compassionate and open and to move further away from entrenched traditions.

In the past, for example, Catholic prayers have denounced Jews for not believing in Jesus. Jews have also accused the World War Two papacy of turning a blind eye to the Holocaust, a charge the Vatican denies.

The new document from the Vatican's Commission for Religious Relations with Jews stressed recent Vatican teachings that the two religions were intertwined and that God had never annulled his covenant with the Jewish people.

LONG TIME COMING! PRAISE GOD!
I also read, that we are to refer to Jewish people as our "elder brothers," and presumably sisters as well.

When I heard about this yesterday morning, my first thought was, "Oh I wish my husband was here to know," then I immediately thought, "oh my goodness, Praise You, Lord, Jesus Christ, my sweet DrO does know and maybe, just maybe had a hand in this, along with that sweet man, the Messianic Jew, who was slaughtered in San Bernardino!

You’d think it would be obvious,
but there will be plenty pushback.

I saw a few days ago on “Hannity” the woman who was married to the Messianic Jew who was killed in that massacre in San Bernardino last week. She married a wonderful man died too soon.

This reminds us that Jews and Christians now are going to have to protect each other in these very dark and dangerous times.

Rewriting Christianity doesn’t make it so.

LONG TIME COMING! PRAISE GOD!

What????

Are yo agreeing that Christians should NOT preach the Gospel to Jews? That seems to be another thing at odds with Scripture... and your claims that Peter was you first leader. Paul preached to the Gentiles, but Peter's job was to preach to the JEWS!!!

Matthew 28: 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." ...

... Galatians 6: 6 As for those who were held in high esteem - whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism -they added nothing to my message. 7 On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised. 8 For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle to the Gentiles. 9 James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

11 When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

15 "We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles 16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

17 "But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18 If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.

19 "For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"

The messianic Jew in San Bernardino wasn’t necessarily also a genetic Jew.

I believe it’s important to tell everyone we can about Jesus. We should pray about the right time and place and method, but people don’t ‘convert’ others to Jesus. It is God who opens the heart.

Romans 1:16
[ The Just Live by Faith ] For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

There is truth that God will keep his promises to the Jews. It is also true that the gospel is for the Jew first, then the rest of us.

Supporting and defending Jews and their right to practice the religion of their choice does not demand a rewrite of the gospel.

I agree with your theological position. Clearly Jesus would not be happy with the “nix the conversion” part. It’s hard to see how someone who claims to serve in Peter’s office could come up with that. However, the no anti-Semitism part IS really a good message!

Yes, I saw that segment, too and read her FaceBook posts and also some of her husband’s FaceBook and Twitter posts.
STRANGE but I thought I had read his before (NOT KIDDING) so

I’m still wondering whether he could possibly have been a FReeper and if so, how would we know his screen name?

I swear to you, some of his posts seemed very familiar to me...

When I have time or can’t sleep late at night, I’m going to peruse the CA FReeper List to see if any screen name jumps out at me...

“The Inquisition, let’s begin,
“The Inquisition, look out sin!
“We have a mission, to convert the Jew........”

“We’re gonna teach them wrong from right,
“We’re gonna help them see the light,
“And make an offer, that they just can’t refuse.....”

(sorry, couldn’t resist)

My church sends a mission team to Israel every year. They were invited to be at an old church over there a few years ago and were the first ones ever invited.

By the time this POPE is through wrecking the Catholic Church he will be espousing that Christianity is just another Jewish Heresy.

That's the same approach OBAMA has taken to this country, nothing special about it, just another country on the planet.
Nothing special about the Catholic Church either. - Tom
