11. From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. 12. From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.

13. On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Pauls message. 15. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. If you consider me a believer in the Lord, she said, come and stay at my house. And she persuaded us.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In the Ancient World, a maker or dealer of "Purple Cloth" was probably wealthy and powerful. The rare dyes used to make purple were derived from the bodies of tiny insects, or to a lesser extent, from certain mollusks, both of which were difficult to obtain. This is why purple became the color of Royalty. It wasn't until the late 1800s that chemical dyes made purple a common color, so much so that the 1890s were called the "Mauve Decade".

We can infer from this that Lydia was a powerful and prominent member of her community. Her invitation to Paul must have been most welcome. But, even more promising than Lydia's hospitality was her heart, which was open to the Gospel Message. She received the Word with the enthusiasm and joy of a child, which is an example to us all.
