Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Paul

36.Some time later, Paul said to Barnabas, Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.

37. Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, 38. but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39. They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40. but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord. 41. He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

(Acts 15)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This little passage is not without its irony. Paul was obviously annoyed with John Mark for deserting him during his important mission. His judgement was based upon reality, and not vindictiveness, yet, Barnabas was willing to give John Mark a second chance. If you recall, it was Barnabas who advocated for Paul back when the Church leaders were afraid of him, with good cause! Paul shows his stubborn streak here, and would prefer to part company with his dear friend over this issue rather than give in. It is good that the Book of Acts gives us these insights, so that we can realize that these early saints were normal people just like you and me, warts and all.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"St. Paul and St. Barnabas"
Stained Glass ~ Great St. Mary's Church
Cambridge, UK

_ ND some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the LORD, and see how they do.

And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.
But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
