Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Paul

8.And Saul approved of their killing him.

The Church Persecuted and Scattered

On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2.Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.

(Acts 8)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

It was a short step from holding the coats of the executioners, to becoming a murderer himself. Saul was a very religious man, who had sat at the feet of Gamaliel, a renowned (and still revered) scholar of the Hebrew Scriptures. In fact, Gamaliel had cautioned the other Jewish leaders to leave the new sect alone, for if it was a false cult, it would die off by itself. If, however, the new sect had Divine origin, any persecution would be battling against God Himself...and who would want to be involved in THAT? (Acts 5:34) One would have hoped that Saul would have heeded his beloved mentor! But, like many religious people, Saul seemed to think that he was holier than his teacher, and appears to have taken personal umbrage at the new believers. Not only did he take it upon himself to persecute the believers in Jerusalem, but he was eager to export his religious war to Damascus, and obtained special permission from the authorities to arrest and possibly execute the Christians there as well. When we look at Paul's letters to the Church later on, we will see that this would be a factor in both his relationship with other Believers, and his understanding of the Grace of God.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Numbers 6:23 (HCSB) 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:

Numbers 6:24 (HCSB) 24 May Yahweh bless you and protect you;

Numbers 6:25 (HCSB) 25 may Yahweh make His face shine on you and be gracious to you;

Numbers 6:26 (HCSB) 26 may Yahweh look with favor on you and give you peace.

Numbers 6:27 (HCSB) 27 In this way they will pronounce My name over the Israelites, and I will bless them.”
