Vatican denies rumour Pope is suffering from brain tumour

The Vatican described the report on an Italian website as 'seriously irresponsible'

The Vatican has denied a rumour that Pope Francis has been diagnosed with a brain tumour.

The unsourced story was published last night on the Italian website Quotidiano Nazionale, reporting that the tumour was discovered “months ago” and no surgery would be required.

The Vatican described the report as “unfounded” and “seriously irresponsible.”

Vatican spokesman, Fr Federico Lombardi said: ““The spread of the totally unfounded news of the health condition of the Holy Father on the part of an Italian news agency is seriously irresponsible and not worthy of attention,” said the Reverend Federico Lombardi. “Also, as all can see, the Pope continues to exercise his intense activity without interruption and in an absolutely normal way.”

But Andrea Cangini, the editor of Quotidiano Nazionale, or National Daily, has stood by the story saying that the Vatican denial was “understandable and expected.”

He said that the editors had debated whether to publish the story but concluded that it was in the public interest to do so.

Interestingly, the statement doesn't say the rumor is false.

Good observation. No lie, or at least no demonstrable lie. No answer, merely the appearance of one. Casuistry.

I’ll believe it when I see it on the cover of National Enquirer.

“No answer, merely the appearance of one.”

Exactly right. A non-denial denial. Even if a brain tumor is benign, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t grow larger over time. And it usually does. As they didn’t, it appears, operate on it for a period of the past 8 months, if he really has had a tumor that long, does that mean due to its location, it is inoperable? Lots of questions. Will be interesting to see whether more info gets out about this or not. Or when.

Sounds more like the move towards an exit plan before the church collapses.
