Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

John the Baptist

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

(Matthew 3)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

All four of the Gospel Account record the baptism of Jesus by His cousin John, but only Matthew and John the Evangelist give us details of their conversation. From earlier reading, we remember that, even in the womb, John KNEW Who his younger Cousin REALLY was. He must have been absolutely stunned to see Jesus humbling Himself before him, especially after his discussion with the Pharisees about the Man Who was to follow, whose shoelaces he was unfit to tie!

His embarrassed protest "It is You Who should be baptizing ME, not the other way around!" is countered gently by his Cousin, Who explains that it is necessary to "fulfill righteousness". Whether John fully understood this or not, he submitted to the Greater Wisdom and baptized Jesus in the Jordan River.

Sometimes, God asks us to do things that do not fit our logic or even "common sense". There is a greater Purpose and Plan in operation, and our little part in it may seem insignificant, but, as we see here, obedience to God will always supersede our own plans and perceptions!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"The Baptism of Christ"
Annibale Carracci – 1584

_ HEN cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of
him.

But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
