One of Europe's Biggest Mosques to Open in Moscow

One of the biggest mosques in Russia will finally open in Moscow on Wednesday after a decade of construction work, with President Vladimir Putin and foreign dignitaries attending the ceremony.

The new place of worship — built on the site of the city's original mosque — will be able to accommodate more than 10,000 people, about 10 times more than its predecessor, Rushan Abbyasov, deputy chairman of Russia's Council of Muftis, told The Moscow Times on Tuesday.

Moscow's new mosque will be on a par with two enormous mosques in Russia's North Caucasus region: the Heart of Chechnya in Grozny, and the Grand Mosque in Makhachkala, Dagestan.

Along with Putin, Turkish President Recep Erdogan and Palestine's leader Mahmoud Abbas are expected to attend the ceremony, the RIA Novosti news agency reported Tuesday.

Moscow's original mosque, built in 1904, was the only functioning Muslim place of worship during most of the Soviet era. Reconstruction work began in May 2005, but in 2011 the old building was completely demolished.

Knowing the Russians, the new mosque probably has more bugs than a tropical rain forest.

What better way to keep the enemy within coralled and monitored?

Another gift from Saudi Arabia, no doubt, thanks to our oil companies that finance Muslim expansion. That’s why Obama has tried to defeat our domestic oil production, which competes with OPEC, throughout his presidency.

I was going to say it’s probably bugged to hell by the KGB. Let them plan their Jihads there and see how fast people disappear.

Wish we could do the same. Alas....we are absolutely forbidden to monitor mosques by our government.....but we can monitor anyone who is not a muzzie.

Well better to have one mega mosque where you can monitor them all than a 100 small mosques where they have discretion.

Russia has an interesting relationship with islam. A good part of her southern districts are ethnically muslim, and have been since Tamerlane. Yet they are very opposed to some muslim rebels.

The religious policy in Russia is hard to understand. They hate the Catholic church and Evangelicals, yet have a decent relationship with many of the Lutheran Synods in Russia.

Do they call it The Beslan Memorial Mosque or The Nord-Ost Memorial Mosque?
