Was Jonah in Denial?
No, he was in the Mediterranean! (bad joke...LOL)
We know from Scripture that Jonalh was:
· Son of Amittai (2 Kgs. 14:25)
· From village of Gath-Hepher in Zebulun (2 Kgs. 14:25; Josh. 19:13)
· Served as God's prophet during the reign of Jeroboam II {~780 BC} (2 Kgs. 14:23-27)
· He spoke God's word of Israel's victory and expansion of territory (2 Kgs. 14:25-27)
We also know, from yesterday, that he was called by God to preach Repentance to the wicked city of Nineveh (Present day Mosul, Iraq). His response was to flee, not in fear, but in self-righteous indignation. He didn't like the people of Nineveh (for good reason) and seemed to not want to be instrumental in their salvation.
We also do see some symptoms of denial and depression, as Jonah slept through the ordeal of the sailors all around him. It was not the sleep of a peaceful innocent, but the sleep of one hiding from the truth about themselves.
Yet, he knows that it is his fault that the people around him are suffering, so he tells them to throw him into the sea.
