Elisha

8 One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. 9 She said to her husband, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. 10 Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.”

11 One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. 12 He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.” So he called her, and she stood before him. 13 Elisha said to him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’”

She replied, “I have a home among my own people.”

14 “What can be done for her?” Elisha asked.

Gehazi said, “She has no son, and her husband is old.”

15 Then Elisha said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. 16 “About this time next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.”

“No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!”

17 But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Although she was affluent, and excelled in the qualities of hospitality and piety, the Shunammite Woman had an ache in her heart that could not be eased. In Ancient Times, childlessness was a reproach, and there were no "Fertility Clinics" or "Baby Doctors" to help out.

It didn't matter whose "fault" it was, and indeed, in the case of this lady, it was her husband who was too old, yet she alone bore the shame. I know. It wasn't fair, but that's the way it was.

Yet, God used this very particular and painful scenario to perform the greatest miracles in the Bible. Sarah, Rebbecca, Rachel, Hannah, and several others in the Hebrew Scriptures, as well as Elizabeth in the Gospels, all suffered from this same malady. As unfair as the public shame associated with infertility was, all of the aforementioned ladies became miraculously pregnant with very important Patriarchs and Saints.

The incredulity of the Shunammite Woman was not dealt with as severely as some of the other recipients of this particular miracle. Sarah actually LAUGHED when she heard the news, and was reprimanded for it. The event was forever enshrined in the name of her firstborn: Isaac, which means "Laughter". In the Gospel of Luke, Zacharia was struck dumb for the duration of his wife's pregnancy for his unbelief.

Bringing forth life from the infertile is a glorious miracle that emphasizes the Omnipotence of Almighty God.

Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.

And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.

And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.

And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.

And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.

And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.

And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
