Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Elisha

The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”

2 Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”

“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”

3 Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”

5 She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”

But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

7 She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

(2 Kings 4)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Elisha takes the little amount of oil in the widow's possession, and multiplies it in the same manner that Jesus would do later in the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes.Widows and orphans were supposed to have been cared for by the community, but this lady and her two boys seemed to have "fallen through the cracks". Instead of merely providing the widow with a miracle of instant provision, Elisha assigned her and the boys to collect as many containers as they could, and then set her up in the olive oil business. She was able to pay off her debts (they were not just "wiped out".) and live off the remaining profits.

For the last four years, I have been a widow without a normal "job" to support myself. However, The Lord gave me a gift of teaching music, so I collected every possible "jar" I had (after-school hours in the day) and am able to pay my debts and live off the rest. The summers are tough, because the kids go away to camp, but the big season begins next week, and my calendar is already full. Once the hours run out, like the jars, the work stops too.

Sorry for making this personal, but I couldn't help but notice the coincidence! LOL!

Perhaps the point here is that, when in need, we must use whatever we have, and trust that God will give the increase. Works for me!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Your efforts in every direction are a blessing. Whether as a Bible teacher here at FR, a music teacher or a music director at your biker church (sorry, I could not resist) you are a blessing to all who touch your life.

I like your story of teaching music. I have been taking piano lessons for 2 years, and my teacher is such a blessing to me. You are blessing your students, as well. Maybe someday I can teach someone to play piano.

God Bless Israel and keep her strong.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Elisha and the Widow of the Prophet
Pouring the Flasks of Oil"

Aert de Gelder - c. 1690

_ OW there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.

And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.
Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

nd when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.

And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
