Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

At first glance, this passage would seem to indicate that Elisha was a bit "thin skinned" and couldn't take a little teasing about his hair loss! However, a more careful study of the original language reveals something else.

Many of the earlier translations use the word "youths" instead of "boys". From the context, we might even infer that they were what we now call "Youts", and it is a synonym for a gang of young thugs. These were not little boys, and there were AT LEAST 42 of them!

Their taunt (originally translated as "Go UP, Baldy!") was blasphemous on two counts. In the 13th Chapter of Leviticus, several skin diseases which would make a man unclean and unfit for the Temple Service, are listed and described. Some of the more severe forms of leprosy involved hair loss, but "male pattern baldness" is specifically described as a natural process and NOT a disqualifier. By mocking his baldness, they were saying he was unfit to serve as a prophet and "unclean".

Just across the Jordan The Great Prophet Elijah had been taken up by a fiery chariot. The taunts of the "Youts" imply that if Elisha was such a great Man of God, he should be able to "Go Up" too. I love the NIV, but in this instance, it is helpful to see how other translations are rendered.

Since Elisha was being attacked by a gang of "youts", and was unarmed, he did the very best thing. He called upon God! Suddenly, two extremely angry female bears come out of the woods! The great 17th Century Christian Commentator Matthew Henry suggests that these two she-bears had been recently robbed of their cubs, probably by the same youths who were now tormenting and mocking the prophet of God! In any case, God uses Nature to protect His Servant.

In spite of all this, the town's water supply remained fresh, and is to this day.
