Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
Elijah
17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
(James 5)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
This is the last time that Elijah is cited by name in the Christian Bible. However, he is implied one more time, and that will be tomorrow's thread.
The Apostle James was the head shepherd of the church in Jerusalem in the few years before the Destruction in 70AD. He wrote a "Strongly Worded Letter" to the Church which has been canonized as The Book of James. In his letter he addresses several issues, and makes the reference to Elijah when speaking of the need for effectual, fervent, righteous prayer.
What I love is that James emphasizes that Elijah was just an ordinary man, like you and me, who, was able to cause drought and subsequent rain by prayer. He did not possess "Powers" himself. He was a man who allowed himself to be used by God.
As we wrap up out study on this amazing prophet of God, we can deduce a number of things:
1. Elijah was an ordinary man. He was not an Angel, or a Magician, or a Superhero. He suffered from Depression, Discouragement, Disillusionment, fearfulness, and even on one recorded occasion, suicidal thoughts.
2. He talked to God constantly. He did not use flowery language, fancy formulas, but, like Moses, was able to vent his frustration in ordinary language because he was intimate with God.
3. When filled with the Spirit of God, he was bold and fearless, and even "politically incorrect". His letter to the King of Judah and pronouncements to Ahab and Jezebel were epic acts of courage.
4. He was a Man of faith. His challenge to the King's priests and prophets of Baal to a duel of impossible proportions would have been a total disaster if it failed. But he did it anyway, believing God.
We humans can make kings, governments, religions, customs, art, and great buildings. But only God can make an Elijah.
