Elijah

19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.”

“Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”

21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.

When Elijah calls Elisha to be his disciple, he knows that it is no small matter. It is a lifetime commitment. Elisha knows this too, as he kisses his parents goodbye and slaughters his oxen to feed his village one last time.

Sometimes, when a person answers the call of God upon his or her life, they might be rejected by their family and friends, lose their job, or even be at odds with the governing powers. Elijah knows from his own experience that Elisha could be facing all this and more.

Yet, Elisha answers the call, takes care of business, wraps things up at home, and accepts the mantle of a prophet.
