What happens to a down syndrome baby given up for adoption? I am truly ignorant of how that scenario plays out. Regardless I can’t imagine that fate is any worse than being killed in the womb. After 5 months, is there any harm to this woman if she gives birth and then gives up the baby?

It can be legally processed just like any other adoption. In fact, if she is 5 months pregnant.. she has four or five additional months to look into open adoption is they would like. There are couples who will adopt a Down Syndrome child.
The NDSAN (National Down Syndrome Adoption Network) has a site where waiting children.. some in the adoption process.. are listed.
My son and daughter in law adopted a Down Syndrome baby from the Ukraine.
About a year ago (?) there was a couple in a similar situation, and their pastor said wait up 48 hours, and I'll find you an adoptive couple that will gladly take the child. Word spread fast through the social media and in 48 hours I think he had almost 100 offers.
God has touched the hearts of so many of His sheep to adopt beautiful babies with Downs syndrome. An old Army chaplain I knew adopted two or three babies with disabilities. One of the girls was Downs. My old asst. Ops officer who is a Christian had a wonderful baby boy with Downs. The early life is challenging but there are so many good Christian folks out in the community to help the families. This specific family was blessed with great love, compassion, patience and energy.
So yes, there are plenty of people who love Christ just waiting to rescue one of His little ones. Even the little ones who need more assistance.
Don't know if some have ever interacted with children and people with Downs Syndrome. Most go on to learn a trade, to work and take care of themselves with a family member or church or service checking in on them from time to time. Some do have to have assistance throughout their lives. Once again, as a Christian, I see this as a test of our faith. Do we really believe and accept everything Christ spoke to us in Scriptures and in our heart by The Holy Spirit? Do we lovingly answer His call for the least of His brothers and sisters. If we believe it we lovingly answer the call.
In my encounters with Christian families who have had children with sickness and disability (some life long), I find these people are 'geared' by God and enabled to rise up to the situation. That is God's Grace in action right before our eyes.
People who adopt down syndrome babies get several sources of state and federal dollars for adopting and caring for disabled. They qualify for services on all fronts, and respite care. Some downs kids do great and become independent and others are needing care and supervision for the rest of their lives.
