Just remembered that there is a little story behind the symbolism of “world’s tallest building” so far as Saudis and muslims are concerned.

When muslim-arab bedouins (desert dwelling arabs mainly in today’s Saudi Arabi and Jordan) invaded Zoroastrian Persia (circa mid 7th century AD - Mo was dead at the time; it was one of his Caliphs ie successors named “umar” or “omar” who led their army), they were amazed and angered when seeing buildings, and even trees that were at the same height or taller than the Kabaa in Mecca. Of course, the exterior of the Kabaa was unlike today’s one.

The muslim-arabs then proceeded to chop down as many tall trees as they could, plus destroyed as many palaces & buildings as they could, which, in their view, were more ‘imposing’ than the Kabaa.

Moreover, after their invasion, the muslim-arabs demanded all non-muslims to dismount their horse in the presence of a muslim. Any Zoroastrian or non-mulsim house had to be significantly lowering in height than a muslim one.

That’s one reason we now see most houses in Yazd and Kerman provinces of Iran (were most original Zoroastrians lived and still live) are structurally designed to be a single level units, with very small or no windows, so that they had to live in almost airless darkness. This was deliberately done to further demoralize the Zs since *light* is essential in Z religious and cultural belief. Just as they didn’t permit Zs to wear (prescription) eye-glasses.

Zoroastrians later incorporated two separate entrances to their house, with a hallway inbetween. That was to alert them when muslims tried to attack their house (mostly middle of the night) to loot their belongings, and kill them in the process if they resisted. Once muslims became aware of this particular *defensive design* they prohibited it as well.

Good website to explore:
