What, precisely, was being protested?

If you want to be precise, the protest was against the Diet of Speyer (1529), which "aimed to reverse the policy of religious tolerance adopted in 1526".

Anti-Catholic authors love to paint the RCC as running around setting heretics alight before the reformation. Truth is Ridley was convicted of heresy in a show trial, by his own countrymen in England, because he supported the wrong person for succession to the throne.

The Vatican is located on the other side of the Tiber. It is not one of the seven hills of Rome.
