Michael Coren goes Anglican, denounces Catholic moral teaching

The CWR Blog Michael Coren goes Anglican, denounces Catholic moral teaching "I could not remain in a church that effectively excluded gay people," says the Canadian author and apologist, "I felt that the circle of love had to be broadened, not reduced." May 02, 2015 02:35 EST Carl E. Olson

This past Monday, I received an e-mail with the news that Michael Coren had left the Catholic Church and recently entered the Anglican communion. Coren, the Canadian author and apologist who has written a monthly CWR column ("Controversies with Coren") since September 2013, had apparently been attending an Anglican church for a year or longer. Shortly after receiving the news, I sent Coren an e-mail, and a few minutes later we had a 20-minute phone conversation. I agreed to have our conversation off the record, as he requested, because I simply wanted to hear his side of things. It was a very civil, friendly conversation, and I appreciate that Michael was willing to talk to me.

That said, the reasons Coren gave me for leaving the Catholic Church were not convincing. Actually, they were rather confusing. They certainly weren't very cohesive or compelling.

A couple of days ago, I informed Michael that CWR would no longer be carrying his column, a decision that I'm certain he expected. He accepted the news graciously and professionally.

That attitude exhibits a total lack of belief in an actual God or the Supernatural. Church for him is just an organization of like minded people. You don't stay in a group that is not compatible with your own particular lifestyle. I know a lot of Protestants that are like that. If they are uncomfortable with what a preacher says they go find another church, maybe the same denomination, maybe not. My wife is like that. She doesn't understand why someone would stay where the preaching makes him uncomfortable.

A paedophile should not stay in a church that does not celebrate paedophilia. There is no sense that the individual has to get right with God. If God won't approve of my particular preferences then God should just buzz off or I will go find a different god that approves.

He also wouldn't make it as a Baptist leader!

Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Methodist, ELCA Lutheran, and many others will welcome his point of view.

"I could not remain in a church that effectively excluded gay people,"

The Church does not exclude gay people. It prohibits sinful acts - homosexuality, fornication, adultery, etc.

Hate the sin, love the sinner.

Not being Catholic nor familiar with Michael Coren, I have to say one thing. I admire Mr Coren for leaving his church instead of asking/telling his church to change to accept his beliefs. Unlike others, I could name (can you hear me Ms Pelosi) who demand the church change to accommodate them on things like abortion or just ignore their church teachings.

I wasn’t a follower of Coren, but those times I heard him speak he seemed grounded and unpretentiously orthodox.

Am surprised by this, but then again, this is spiritual warfare and “casualties” can happen anytime and anywhere.

I’M HENRY THE VIII, I AM

I’m Henry The Eighth, I am!
Henry The Eighth I am, I am!
I got married to the queer next door
He’s been married seven times before
And every one was an Henry (Henry)
He wouldn’t have a Willie or a Sam (no Sam)
I’m his eighth old man, I’m Henry
Henry The Eighth I am!

Second verse, same as the first!

I’m Henry The Eighth, I am!
Henry The Eighth I am, I am!
I got married to the queer next door
He’s been married seven times before
And every one was an Henry (Henry)
He wouldn’t have a Willie or a Sam (no Sam)
I’m his eighth old man, I’m Henry

H - E - N - R - Y
Henry (Henry)
Henry (Henry)
Henry The Eighth I am, I am!
Henry The Eighth I am!

Yeah!

Matthew 7:13 Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.
14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

he rejects the God of the Bible, okay for him, he has free will. and if he finds another guy to shack up with, I say fine for them, too. I do not agree with their choice, but their lives are theirs to lead, not mine. I wish them every happiness they can find. We have homosexual neighbors and they seem quite content, they are cordial and they keep their private lives indoors, creating no problems for anybody else in town.

what I object to is another so-called church pretending to be a Christian organization while approving or endorsing or teaching homosexual conduct is fine and dandy with God.
This is a bald-faced lie (Lev. 18.22; Lev.20:13; Rom.1L26-28; 1 Cor.6:9-11; 1 Tim.1:10-11; Jude 1:7, etc.
This socalled church is nothing less than a deliberate fraud.

“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” Matthew 7:15.

It would be helpful if there were some way such fake churches could at least be required to remove the term ‘Christian’ from their advertising

The Church welcomes those with same sex attraction with open arms. If they are however engaged in behaviors of actually having sex with another person of the same gender, She loves them too much to leave them in their sinful behavior. The attraction is not the sin. The behavior is the sin. Love the sinner, as Jesus did; hate the sin, as Jesus did. Jesus would’ve confirmed them in their attraction, but not in their sin. He would’ve instructed them that they are destined for a great life of many Filial and Agape loving relationships. Eros loving is reserved for those opposite sex married couples. Objectively, those with same sex attraction may be being called to a different purpose than those in the vocation of marriage.

"I felt that the circle of love had to be broadened, not reduced."

How is it loving to indulge someone in behavior that will send them to hell?

very very good point about Pelosi

(maybe maybe her new Bishop may actually uphold Christian teaching and declare she has disqualified herself from taking communion, as Canon Law provides.....?) we will see

Can. 915 Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and ******others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin****** are not to be admitted to holy communion.

(the astericks are added by Yours Truly to highlight the contained phrase)

Thus sayeth faithhopecharity: “It would be helpful if there were some way such fake churches could at least be required to remove the term ‘Christian’ from their advertising.”

It is actually up to the individual to figure that out. How do they figure that out you ask? Good question. But a good start is to pick up the Bible and apply the words to your life.

This is one of the problems in my opinion with the thinking of Catholics, they try very hard to get protestants to join their organization under the blanket guise of Christian unity. Those among us in the evangelical camp simply pick up their leather covered owners manual and study the problem through.

Many of the churches troubles go away when they stop trying to appeal to a wide variety of thought to win the numbers game and simply stay on topic.

yes.
all i mean is that...
there is a concept called False Advertising

and
it is false advertising for a church to claim it is Christian when (regardless of any other questionable or controversial tenets of its faith message) when it preches a morality that clearly and Directly contradicts what the Bible says

its just that a sign claiming to be Christian then misleads innocent people who might walk by, into walking in.....

there are a number of doctrines of various denominations which are controversial or not univerally accepted, perhaps because they rest on a single verse...or even a mistranslation of a single verse

but... what I am writing now about...is the case where a socalled church preaches and teaches in CLEAR and DIRECT opposition to numerous Bible teachings (such as promoting or permitting homosexual ‘marriages’)

there;s no way around that one... Biblically.
conducting homo ‘marriages’ at the altar of such a place means it is NOT a Christian church.
The sign outside should be so amended.

that is all I meant to say.
thanks for your note...

I guess we just have to take the words of the Bible to heart which indicate that the path is narrow and few will find it. All we can do is point the traveler in the right direction. That is our duty, that is our call.
