The Secret Roots of Liberation Theology
National Review ^ | April 23, 2015 | Ion Mihai Pacepa

Posted on 04/23/2015 6:15:39 PM PDT by rmlew

History often repeats itself, and if you have lived two lives, as I have done, you have a good chance of seeing the reenactment with your own eyes.

Liberation theology, of which not much has been heard for two decades, is back in the news. But what is not being mentioned is its origins. It was not invented by Latin American Catholics. It was developed by the KGB. The man who is now the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, secretly worked for the KGB under the code name “Mikhailov” and spent four decades promoting liberation theology, which we at the top of the Eastern European intelligence community nicknamed Christianized Marxism.

Liberation theology has been generally understood to be a marriage of Marxism and Christianity. What has not been understood is that it was not the product of Christians who pursued Communism, but of Communists who pursued Christians. I described the birth of liberation theology in my book Disinformation, co-authored with Professor Ronald Rychlak. Its genesis was part of a highly classified Party/State Disinformation Program, formally approved in 1960 by KGB chairman Aleksandr Shelepin and Politburo member Aleksei Kirichenko, then the second in the party hierarchy after Nikita Khrushchev.

While I am somewhat reticent to post this as I am not Eastern Orthodox, the political implications are important. Many traditionalists seem to think that that Russian Orthodox Church in Russia is some savior of tradition. In fact, it is a servant of the KGB.

I definitely agree that the Russian Orthodox Church was highly infiltrated by the KGB during the Soviet Union. I have a sense that it is less so today by the KGB’s successor. There was a great underground Christian ‘movement’ during the Soviet years. The KGB managed to infiltrate the ROC, but they did NOT destroy Christianity in the USSR.

CDF head: Pope Francis has close ties with liberation theology

The Tablet ^ | 5/2/14 | Christa Pongratz-Lippitt

http://www.thetablet.co.uk/blogs/1/365/liberation-theology-coming-in-from-the-cold

According to Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Francis’prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Pope Francis has close ties with liberation theology, the same discaterio that once condemned the movement. In the 1980s the CDF under then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger attacked liberation theology as borrowing “from various currents of Marxist thought“.

“ Francis is not a fool. He is an ideologue and a meddlesome egoist. His clumsy intrusion into the Middle East and covert collusion with Obama over Cuba makes that clear. Megalomania sends him galloping into geopolitical—and now meteorological—thickets, sacralizing politics and bending theology to premature, intemperate policy endorsements.” (Maureen Mullarkey)

My comment

Francis recovered Marxist liberation theology from the trash bin of history.

Few know that Müller is also a pupil of Gustavo Gutierrez, the “father” of Latin-American liberation theology. It certainly, when Müller, the prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith affirms that “Pope Francis has close ties with liberation theology” it makes clear the reason for the exaltation of Leonardo Boff and the most radical leaders of the Marxist Liberation theology with the election of Pope Francisco.

It is a fact that in the Liberation Theology the Gospels are profoundly corrupted by Marxist ideology and praxis, including the promotion of class struggle and the creation of the so called “iglesia popular” (parallel and opposed to the Church), an instrument used by Marxist theologians to support the Marxist guerrillas and regimes in Latin America.

Wow. I knew from the first time I read about Liberation theology it was a Soviet Union strategy to undermine the Catholic Church. It is nice to know they are revealing the nuts and bolts of it.

Now, let’s get out the spotlight of truth and learn what is going on with the social justice movement in American Churches. I am sure it is the same Marxist effort, alive and well in America.

I used to know a Russian guy whose family had an icon. During the communist years, it hung on the back of the front door. That way, if communist inspectors or police or whatever came to visit, it was concealed as long as the door remained open.

Also, icons over the years can go completely black with smoke from candles burning in front of them. During communism, many people took advantage of this fact. The family that owned it knew it was an icon, but the authorities couldn’t tell by looking at it.

it's been that way since the 30's. the executive branch and white house under FDR were positively infested with KGB operatives and "fellow travelers" before and during WWII... and yet the power that be in DC still built a monument in honor of the memory of this horrible president. truly disgusting.

Maureen Mullarkey is one of my favorites. Look for her excellent piece on Pope Francis demagoguing “climate change” in The Federalist.

Disinformation is an excellent read. I would say this even if I didn't have a footnote mention on the first page.

Also worth mentioning is the largely-forgotten book Cover Cadre, which shines light on the Institute for Policy Studies and the KGB's infiltration of the National Council of Churches.
