(Reuters) - A majority of Americans believe businesses should not be allowed to refuse services based on their religious beliefs in the wake of controversies in Indiana and Arkansas over gay rights and religious freedom, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found on Thursday.
The poll, conducted April 6 to 8, also found that 52 percent of Americans support allowing same-sex couples to marry, far more than the 32 percent who oppose it.
The survey results suggest a split over the issue between Americans and some of the politicians who represent them.
Indiana's Republican governor, Mike Pence, triggered a firestorm in his state this month by signing a law that would allow businesses to refuse services to certain groups or people based on their religious beliefs.
Gay rights activists saw the law as discriminatory and the resulting backlash forced Indiana's state legislature to make changes to the law.
Days later, Arkansas's Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, forced his state legislature to change a similar law in order to avoid having it blow up into a controversy in his state.
The poll found solid opposition to allowing businesses to refuse services or refuse to hire people or groups based on religious beliefs.

Probably not true, but America is nearly finished if it’s even close. I also saw a poll this week that American prefer a new voice with new ideas to be President over someone with experience. How have we gotten here as a society. How, after six catastrophic years of a new voice and new ideas has that view not corrected itself?
We have an America well over half full of feel-gooders over thinkers. Not sure how that gets reversed.
Irrelevant! Polls have nothing to do with religious freedoms or rights held by individuals.
Yeah, based on the way the question’s worded - I’m sure they do. Ask an honest question - and the results would flip the other way.
Irrelevant! Polls have nothing to do with religious freedoms or rights held by individuals.
“Would refuse service to gays” was the headline I read concerning the pizza business. Totally deceptive.
You got that right! I do not trust this poll!
Oh heck, I was just getting the ink dry on the new poll I was inserting into my latest column titled “Most Americans Agree That Food Stamps And Obama Phones Must Be Shut Down.”
(1) The question was worded inappropriately. There is a huge difference between refusing to serve a menu item to a customer in the store and refusing to make a custom artistic item such as a wedding cake. A refusal to engage in offensive artistic expression is an absolute right, and government has no authority to compel obedience in such a situation.
(2) Given these poll results, even for a poorly worded question, America is in grave danger.
I just yesterday saw a poll that took the opposite tack
I bleieve it was 60 percent disapproval of soo called “gay” so called “marriage”
Polls are cheap. Our Freedoms are not!
did i read the acronym IPOS....after the name Reuters?
is that an apple product??/
Most Americans should have been born in the Soviet Union. Freedom of conscience was officially discouraged in THAT former paradise. Bob
25 years of Hollywood propaganda have achieved their desired goal.
Congratulations. Who knew back when people were allowing their 8 year olds to sit in the room and watch Will And Grace that this would be the end result?
(actually, I did)
Lies. Roto-Reuters has been pushing the fag agenda as long as it’s been around.
EVEN with 85% of the majority thinking this, STILL in a Constutitional Republic, the 15% still could maintain their RIGHT, and not be forced by the mob to do what they demand. We are ruled by PRINCIPLES not the 51%..
Dont worry about those polls. They are all lies being taken by liberal activists witha very large number of social profiles. A big part of the sham of Obama is the manipulation of social media as a tool or spreading his false religion of self worship and to Obama he is his own god the “real” American People are waking up to this sham afministration; the dullards not so much.
America is full of immoral people. Sad, but true.
So how come most states, including California, that put gay marriage on the ballot always end up with the voters voting against it?
The question should have been different. It should have been “Should business owners be forced by the government to violate their religion?”
It wasn’t. It was “should business owners be allowed to discriminate against certain classes of people” (or something like that.)
We can learn from that, though, even if it is a bad question. First, nearly half of the people either weren’t sure or agreed that businesses should be able to discriminate.
Next, we learn that Americans are very sensitive to perceived ‘fairness’ issues, so we’re reminded again how important it is which media outlet they get their news from. The slant they receive will be the slant they believe for the most part.
Finally, this appears to be a national sample without any weightings at all based on party or any other affiliation so far as I could find. That means that a lot of these people are not voters.
This poll does not agree with other polls. Guess which one will get the attention?
By the way, what was the wording of the question?
