However, when the "sinners" are still living in sin, there's not a great deal the Church can do as far as reception of Holy Communion is concerned. The Church, like Jesus, can not enter when the door is closed. These are difficult situations and the solution may require heroic sanctity but it is known to all parties. Hence for the purposes of the Synod on the Family, no point would be served by attempting to minimize the gravity of these situations in a way which would damage the true concept of marriage which the Synod professes to strengthen. I believe that is the Cardinal's point.
